Job Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Vice Provost, Undergraduate Advising and Success, the Student Academic Success Specialist (SASS) for the College of Engineering Student Success will support the enrollment, retention and engagement of first and second-year students.

Under the general supervision of the College Student Success Center Director this individual will provide academic advising and success coaching, while also acting as campus concierge for approximately 200-250 undergraduate students during their first 60 units.

The SASS will build rapport, ease transition, and support retention of first year students through a proactive contact plan containing multiple touch-points throughout the academic year.

The SASS will have a demonstrated track record of successfully advising a diverse student population and will work to ensure that all students have a clear path to achieve academic success.

The SASS will focus on helping the campus close the equity gap between its varied student communities by building relationships and retaining students to graduation through increased engagement and a sense of belonging to the SJSU community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement an asset-based and strengths-based approach while using a case management strategy to establish a working relationship that includes regular meetings, careful documentation, tracking of student progress, and assessment of student success
  • Monitor academic progress by leveraging early support systems (EAB Navigate progress reports) and implement systems that offer timely interventions to support student needs
  • Introduce and orient students to their academic requirements (MyProgress, Catalog), academic planning tools (MyPlanner, Roadmap), and campus resources
  • Assist students with navigating University and College processes and procedures, including letters and petitions, schedule changes, academic probation, services related to special needs
  • Implement programming efforts and materials to support students’ transition to college, with the goal of enhancing skills and behaviors that facilitate academic success (e.
  • g., time management, study skills, effective communication with instructors, growth mindset)

  • Implement a student communication plan that aligns with university policies, deadlines, events, and specific supports needed at certain times in the semester
  • Participate in college and university-wide programs and events that support student success for frosh and sophomores and minimize equity gaps
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic principles of individual and group behavior, and techniques and methods of interviewing / connecting with students for the purposes of effective holistic academic advising
  • Ability to advise students individually or in groups on routine matters
  • Effective communication skills (both written and verbal) with individuals / groups
  • Strong advising / counseling skills, including demonstrated excellence in active listening and in helping individuals with problem identification, problem solving, conflict resolution, and decision making
  • Excellent customer-service skills
  • Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences or a job related field
  • Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field. A master’s degree in a job related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Three or more years progressively responsible experience providing academic advising and support to students in a post-secondary setting particularly students from historically underserved communities;
  • a Master’s degree in higher education administration, counseling, social work, or a related field may be substituted for one year of experience

  • Experience in student development theory, outreach practices, and student success services
  • Experience with lower division students and General Education
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, relationship building and student service skills
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment
  • Experience in working with historically underserved student communities from an assets-based approach
  • Experience with Career Services, Veterans Services, EOP, Aspire / McNair, or other transitional student services
  • Compensation

    Classification : Student Services Professional II

    Anticipated Hiring Range : $4,326 / month - $4,500 / month

    CSU Hiring Range : $4,304 / month - $6,120 / month
