Job Summary

The Director of the Accessible Education Center serves as champion for universal student success and technical leader to the team of 16 staff professionals and numerous contract service providers delivering accommodation services to over 1,100 students with disabilities in on-campus and online courses.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Health, Wellness, and Student Services, the Director is responsible for assessment of needs for students with disabilities, engaging students and the community in program / services delivery, leading department operational planning and program / service delivery, ensuring that all services comply with state and federal regulations and CSU policies, and optimizing fiscal and human resources within a comprehensive Accessible Education Center.

Key services and programs led by the Director include Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Testing Accommodation, and the Center for Accessible Technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead program and service delivery to a varied population of students with disabilities
  • Provide operational planning for the department consistent with the vision and goals of the division and university
  • Develop and implement policies that ensure compliance with university, state, and federal regulations
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and records
  • Establish and maintain accurate student and program records to satisfy university, state, and federal requirements with respect to service students with disabilities
  • Provide analytical program reporting to the campus and CSU System
  • Maximize productivity through use of appropriate tools; develop resources that create timely and efficient workflow
  • Work with other student services functions to coordinate workflow and activities to ensure a seamless operation
  • Develop communications and maintain guidelines and procedures to support the functions of the department
  • Prepare progress reports, informs supervisor or project status and deviation from goals
  • Ensure completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of operations
  • Interview, hire, training employees. Supervise, evaluate, and train approximately 16 staff members with an additional 20 interpreters and 20 student employees
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of state and federal disability laws relating to serving students with disabilities
  • Thorough knowledge of accommodations and support services typical provided to students with disabilities in postsecondary education
  • Knowledge of safety requirements for students with disability within a large public university
  • Skilled in managing a complex department operation and balancing priorities across programs, services, and projects
  • Skilled in navigating a complex work environment with numerous stakeholders and leadership levels to generate impact
  • Ability to interpret policies and laws regarding support for individuals with disabilities
  • Ability to interpret medical and diagnostic reports and draw service / accommodation implications from them as they relate to students with disabilities.
  • Ability to partner with community agencies that serve people with disabilities
  • Knowledge of assessment of student service and programs for people with disabilities
  • Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible full-time work experience managing professional staff and overseeing a related student services program
  • Experience managing complex programs and organizations
  • Experience managing budgets
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in a related field
  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible full time work experience in a managerial role in a disability service delivery setting at a university level
  • Experience managing budgets up to $2 million
  • Experience developing and managing complex programs and / or organizations
  • Experience in the application of section 504 and the ADA in the higher education context
  • Experience assessing student services / activities as they relate to disabilities and using assessment results to make changes in services to students

    Hiring Range : Commensurate with experience

    Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.
