Opportunity

eBay’s Data Infrastructure team builds and runs petabyte scale core data platform that powers large scale storage, caching and media infrastructure.

We are looking for a Senior Engineering Director who has strong people management skills as well as significant software engineering expertise.

You will lead the engineering teams that build and operate some of the most critical systems powering eBay’s global ecommerce business.

You will be running & scaling eBay’s core data infrastructure by working closely with engineers, customers, business partners, and product managers.

eBay wide charter to build and run large scale cloud-native platforms : infrastructure, software frameworks, and services for eBay Data : SQL & NoSQL, Data Access Platforms, Media Platform & Store, Distributed Caching, Real-time Messaging & Stream Processing, Distributed databases, Storage, Database Monitoring & Tools, Data Architecture, Data Governance Engineering.

eBay data infrastructure team manages hundreds of PetaBytes of data and powers ebay.com, the first marketplace in the world, with over one Trillion query per day and a 5 9s availability.

Team size is around 80 engineers, infrastructure budget of $50M)

Key Responsibilities

Develop short-term and long-term strategy, align the team, and execute on it.

Estimate engineering effort, plan execution cycles, and create rollout plans for product features and enhancements.

Consistently deliver high-quality and on-time product releases, while maintaining system uptime SLAs.

Collaborate with product management, customers, peer teams and external vendors.

Facilitate and / or lead engineering discussions, technical evaluations, and design reviews.

Remove ambiguity and effectively prioritize the work for the team.

Setup and execute on Quality and Reliability engineering processes to meet or exceed established standards.

Coach and mentor managers and engineers to create a highly effective engineering team.

Cultivate a culture of innovation and engineering excellence.

Effectively perform day-to-day people management and formal performance management of team members. :

Qualifications

Bachelor’s / Master’s / Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering or related field.

15+ years of work experience in software design and implementation, ideally in large scale, 24x7 high performance distributed systems.

10+ years of direct people management experience; experience managing managers is required.

Excellent understanding of computer science fundamentals and deep expertise in high-scale and high-availability system architectures.

Experience with agile development methodologies in an iterative development environment.

Proven ability to understand the business and make appropriate trade-offs.

Proactive and energetic leader with a strong bias for action.

Strong verbal & written communicator with excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
