Position Description

at San José State University seeks qualified candidates for a full-time, tenure-track position in generalist and advanced generalist social work practice with diverse populations with a particular focus on Latinx / a / o communities.

Candidates with a specialization in any of the following curriculum areas are encouraged to apply : advanced practice, psychopharmacology, substance use, children / adolescents / families, or communities and macro work.

Also, experts in health equity, modes of service delivery (e.g., telehealth), gun violence, or crisis / disaster response would add to our faculty team.

Given our Transcultural Perspective and mission focusing on serving marginalized and oppressed populations, as well as history of community-partnered applied research and practice, and interprofessional engagement, we are seeking candidates with experience and research agenda relevant to anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

This position is one of several recruitments focused on Latinx / a / o experiences across campus, including fields such as Educational Counseling, English and Comparative Literature, Journalism and Mass Communications, School of Information, the School of Management, Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, and more.

This is one of two searches in Social Work; the other is for a generalist and advanced generalist Assistant Professor.

Required Qualifications

The candidate for this Assistant or Associate Professor position should have a focus on Latinx communities, for example in practice, teaching, research, or community service.

A Doctorate in Social Work, Social Welfare, or related field; an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program;

Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

Multicultural populations include, but not limited to, those experiencing marginalization, discrimination, or systematic oppression based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability, religion / spirituality, nationality, and / or socioeconomic status;

Research and scholarship including publications, strong research trajectory, and / or potential for publications;

Teaching experience appropriate to academic specialty, and ability to teach in both in-person and online environments (a minimum of two years of post-MSW social work practice experience, if teaching practice courses is required);

Preferred Qualifications

Priority will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following :

Demonstrated working knowledge of the trends in the social work profession in the context of diversity, globalization, and environmentalism, including specializations with certain cultural and / or language groups;

Demonstrated working knowledge and advancement of health equity;

An active and well-articulated research agenda, coupled with interest and ability to secure external grant funding;

Evidence of both undergraduate and graduate teaching and student mentoring;

A minimum of two years teaching experience at the university level;

Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills;

Demonstrated ability to be collegial and collaborative

For those applying for an Associate Professor position, a strong record of achievement in teaching, research, and service demonstrated at previous institutions, and demonstrated curricular, mentorship, research and / or professional leadership

Key Responsibilities

Promote the mission of the School of Social Work;

Develop and sustain an ongoing record of research, scholarly, and / or creative activities (RSCA) and other professional engagement;

Participate in admissions and advising;

Attend meetings and perform committee and other service at the department, college, and university levels;

Participate in curriculum development to meet the needs of the program and its diverse student population;

Participate in the activities and preparation needed to maintain accreditation;

The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.

The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

Candidates seeking an Associate Professor position would be expected to participate in School, College, and University service appropriate for this rank.
