Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Peer Connections, the Learning Assistant Program Coordinator is responsible for the oversight of the Learning Assistant Program.

The Learning Assistant Program Coordinator provides student academic support designed to facilitate successful student persistence through the completion of the baccalaureate degree.

This position contributes significantly to creating and sustaining an exceptionally supportive educational environment for First Year Experience Students, Underserved Students, and First-Generation College Students by supporting the faculty in challenging courses and creating an engaging environment for student learning.

Working independently and under general supervision, this position is responsible for overall development, operation and assessment of the Learning Assistant component of Peer Connections including the collaborating with the Learning Assistant Alliance and the College of Science Learning Assistant processes.

The position works closely with the Peer Connections team to develop, oversee, and assess programs that will benefit all San José State University students.

This position collaborates with faculty to encourage a more interactive experience in the classroom.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recruits, selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates up to 40 Learning Assistants.
  • Provides individual student staff direction and development by conducting one-on-one meetings. This may include counseling and advising students on issues which affect their personal functioning, academic performance, and professional development.
  • Oversees and mentors a graduate assistant position who assists with the day-to-day activities of the Learning Assistant program.
  • Designs, coordinates, and delivers a learning assistant program to SJSU students Directs Learning Assistant assignments and oversees day-to-day operations of the Learning Assistant program with strong collaboration between the College of Science and Peer Connections.
  • Facilitates the marketing and promotion of the Learning Assistant program via outreach presentation to students, staff, and faculty as well as utilizing effective marketing techniques.
  • Develops and implements assessment tools to measure the educational impact of Learning Assistants.
  • Prepares statistical and narrative reports assessing the effectiveness of Learning Assistants.
  • Monitors student assistant payroll, professional development log, assignments, etc.
  • Designs and implements training specific to the Learning Assistant role including theoretical and practical applications.
  • Collaborates with other departments and colleges to provide effective academic assistance and represents Peer Connections as requested on university and division committees
  • Designs and delivers presentations on relevant material.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to strategically manage projects / marketing campaigns from the conceptual stage through the finished product
  • Excellent customer service and public relations skills
  • Strong writing skills to present both qualitative and quantitative information
  • Solid presentation design and facilitation skills
  • Proficiency and knowledge of computer applications in innovative teaching and database management
  • Ability to maintain dignity and self-control in stressful situations; ability to respond to emergency and crisis situations
  • Ability to advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters; ability to determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with students during personal interactions of a sensitive nature.
  • Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends
  • Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related
  • Four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.
  • A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.

    A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Student Affairs / higher education, educational administration, social work, psychology, counseling, public administration, ethnic studies, or other related field.
  • Experience with supporting and advising students on a college campus
  • Experience facilitating and presenting workshops and trainings
  • At least 1 year experience working with a Learning Assistant Program
  • Experience collaborating with campus partners including faculty, staff, and administrators
  • Experience with program development and coordination including supervision / leading a team
  • Compensation

    Classification : Student Services Professional IV

    Anticipated Hiring Range : $5,400 / month - $5,614 / month

    CSU Hiring Range : $5,351 / month - $7,633 / month
