Job Summary

The Director of Innovation will lead the implementation of the strategic plan supporting innovation, technology transfer, commercialization and economic development activities.

The Director will promote the generation of SJSU intellectual property (IP) and industry sponsored research engagements, and will nurture and support the formation of startups and the eventual commercialization of technology.

The Director will have contacts in the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Silicon Valley and beyond to connect our faculty and students with the right training, research sponsorship, development and venture support opportunities.

The Director’s leadership role will involve the establishment of strategies, priorities, policies, and procedures for the innovation programs at SJSU.

The Director will use excellent judgment in making risk- and evidence-based decisions that affect programs or the campus as a whole.

The Director serves as the primary representative of the Office of Innovation and SJSU at various local, state and national meetings on innovation and entrepreneurship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and lead the technology transfer activity including all the development of policies, programs, and operational procedures that will help build, promote and eventually monetize a strong IP portfolio
  • Develop and conduct educational programs designed to train SJSU faculty and students about technology transfer matters including invention disclosures, patents, licensing and confidentiality
  • Develop new innovation and entrepreneurship programs and support existing ones across campus, including : startup challenges, innovation labs, maker programs, coaching / mentoring, incubators, accelerators, and venture funding programs
  • Develop and deliver new programs and resources tailored to the needs of emerging interdisciplinary startup teams as well as the expansion of innovation culture across campus
  • Develop concrete research and innovation partnership models and identify target audiences for collaborative research and innovation programs
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Thorough knowledge of patent law, copyright law and USPTO / international patent filing and prosecution process
  • Negotiation skills and strategic thinking requisite for sustained, high-level interactions with university researchers, government agencies, industry and other private sector entities
  • Ability to write reports, policies, guidelines and procedures with extensive use of software tools
  • Ability to travel for in person meetings and conferences
  • Strong supervisory and management skills
  • Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree
  • A minimum of six (6) years of experience in strategic management of intellectual property and startup innovation ecosystem programming with a minimum of three (3) years in a university environment
  • Working knowledge of intellectual property law, major areas of scientific advancement, technology marketing, sponsored research, investment strategies, and / or business law and processes
  • Progressive leadership experience either in a university technology transfer office or within industry leadership positions responsible for new ventures
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Science or Engineering, JD
  • Experience managing a technology transfer or innovation office
  • Supervising direct reports who work in a high pressure, deadline-driven environment
  • Proven industry, investment, and / or small enterprise experience
  • Experience in key functional areas, such as company formation, licensing, commercialization, and deal structuring
  • Involvement in national associations relating to intellectual property and technology management
  • Involvement in regional innovation ecosystem programs and networks

    Hiring Range : Commensurate with experience
