Job Summary

The International / Non-Resident Admissions Counselor and Recruiter performs various functions under the supervision of the Associate Director for Student Outreach and Recruitment to deliver a variety of recruitment and advising efforts in support of attracting and enrolling an academically strong, culturally diverse and socially conscious undergraduate student population in support of SJSU’s enrollment management plan in the department of Student Outreach and Recruitment.

  • This position is responsible for recruiting, advising and counseling all new prospective undergraduate international and non-resident students applying to SJSU for undergraduate admissions;
  • conducts one on one meetings and group presentations for international / Non-resident prospective applicants, reviews and evaluates both international and domestic transcripts and related documents to determine admissibility.

    Actively collaborates with other university staff involved in various aspects of admissions, records and financial aid processing, to ensure that the applicant has information to be informed.

    The International / Non-resident Admissions Counselor and Recruiter works to build collegial relationships with college partners, high school counselors and campus community colleagues.

    The primary responsibility of the International / Non-resident Admissions Counselor and Recruiter is to represent SJSU to prospective students, parents, community college, and high school counselors.

    Working under minimal supervision, the position is responsible for maintaining a high level of knowledge regarding CSU admission policies, with direct emphasis on international / non-resident admission policies, procedures and advising practices.

    Represents SJSU at a high level of customer service to facilitate and to ensure quality enrollment experience at SJSU.

    Key Responsibilities

  • Ensures the effective communication process (from recruitment through enrollment) to prospective non-resident and international students and their families.
  • Provides workshops, one-to-one meetings, and serves as Counselor of the Day answering phones, providing virtual services, and e-mail communications to advise non-resident, international and domestic applicants on requirements.
  • Participates in designing and conducting SJSU admissions presentations and various workshops such as the CSU application and Next Steps workshops as needed or requested.
  • Coordinates and attends recruitment activities for international / non-resident and domestic students at SJSU, community colleges, and high schools within California and out of state.
  • Serves as main liaison in the advising and recruitment of international / non-resident prospective freshmen and transfer students.
  • As needed, maintain a small caseload of local and non-local high schools as main Admissions Counselor / Recruiter contact / liaison for SJSU.
  • Conducts in-depth interviews to assess students’ needs, goals, major choices, and preparedness for university level work.
  • Researches and promotes professional recruitment tools, strategies and skills used in the industry.
  • Maintains understanding and knowledge of SJSU policies by participating in training and staff meetings on a regular basis.
  • Creates and maintains professional working relationships with International / Non-Resident Community College Transfer Centers and out-of-state high school counselors.
  • Communicates admissions process, deadlines and Next Steps process to counselors and program coordinators.
  • Assists with implementing and communicating the non-resident and international recruitment plan of Enrollment Management to the campus community and provides feedback for improvement.
  • Use of Hobsons Connect and / or current CRM and communication tools to track, analyze and communicate to non-resident and international lead retrievals from recruitment events and / or digital / electronic inquiries.
  • Conducts and coordinates virtual one on one and small group advising appointments and meetings with prospective freshmen / transfer students, former students returning (FSR’s), high school and community college counselor colleagues and other community partners.
  • Coordinate and host out-of-state or virtual recruitment and yield events and receptions for prospective and / or admitted non-resident / international students to SJSU.
  • Coordinate and host out-of-state or virtual training sessions and meetings to update non-resident / international student focused counselors and colleagues on SJSU specific admissions and academic policies, practices and academic / campus resources.
  • Participates in the implementation of short- and long-term goals for SOAR counseling strategic plan.
  • Produces reports including analysis of recruitment, admissions outcomes, and yield numbers.
  • Interprets and explains policies to applicants, staff members. Provides clarification on policies and procedures to other SJSU offices and representatives from other colleges and institutions.
  • Tracks prospective applicants and creates Return on Investment (ROI) reports for the Director and Associate Director to ensure outcomes of recruitment efforts are documented and analyzed.
  • Assesses academic records of international applicants for admission to the university; prepares and transmits individualized evaluation of transfer credit;
  • advises on fulfillment of remaining requirements; assists students in the appropriate appeals process.

  • During peak periods, assists with the verification process for undergraduate domestic applicants, determining admissibility of applicants via transcript and other documentation review.
  • Collaborates with and supports other Student Outreach and Recruitment (SOAR) professional staff and student ambassadors with Counselor of the Day / Virtual Front Desk drop in advising for all prospective students and guests to SJSU.
  • Represents Undergraduate Admissions and Outreach, Enrollment Services and Division of Student Affairs at meetings, events and training sessions ensuring a professional impression and quality experience.

  • Ability to rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus.

  • Ability to travel extensively in and out of state.
  • Heavy travel and extensive work hours will be required on evenings and weekends during peak recruitment / yield and processing periods and throughout the year depending on the goals set by the enrollment planning team.
  • Ability to perform advising and pre-admissions counseling in a virtual setting as well as balancing schedule with in-person recruitment and travel.
  • Ability to advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters.
  • Working knowledge of technology and software applications such as : word processing, spreadsheet, database management, and communication tools.
  • Ability to learn PeopleSoft, Filemaker, OnBase, Zoom and other virtual platforms etc.

  • Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment. Must plan and execute multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects.
  • Ability to maintain an understanding of the academic year calendar and processing cycles which affect the workflow of the Office of Admissions and Outreach unit and the Enrollment Services department.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain a thorough knowledge of undergraduate admissions and evaluation policies and procedures.
  • Implement guidelines to support the functions of the unit.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to independently coordinate and facilitate off campus yield events and virtual webinars for non-resident and / or international students out of state and from different locations.
  • Ability to check complex records and detailed information for compliance with CSU requirements for both domestic and international student applicants.
  • Ability to interpret information from a variety of institutions, including foreign institutions with differing record systems.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and work efficiently under pressure.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate coursework in higher education / student affairs, counseling, or related field
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional student services experience in recruiting, advising and counseling in a higher education environment.
  • A master’s degree in higher education / student affairs, counseling, or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.

    A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

    License

    A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

    Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in higher education or similar field
  • 2-3 years of programming and implementation of events in higher education
  • 2-3 years of experience in creating and conducting presentations in higher education
  • 2-3 years of experience working with International and / or Non-Resident students
  • 3 years of academic advising, admission evaluations and / or outreach / recruitment experience in higher education

    Classification : Student Services Professional III

    Anticipated Hiring Range : $4,691 / month - $4,759 / month

    Salary Range : $4,691 / month - $6,683 / month
