The Research Associate / Programmer Analyst supports a wide variety of data management and analytics and evaluation projects in the Office of Institutional Research.
The position develops data governance policies and analytical support to campus constituents for institutional reporting, ad hoc and ongoing studies, and requests for complex research projects.
This position also collaborates with IT and other internal partners for data migration, integration, and governance across multiple data sources.
The incumbent manages projects largely independently and may help coordinate the efforts of the Institutional Effectiveness and Strategic Analytics Unit including IR support staff such as programmers, institutional research technicians, and student assistants.
The position is responsible for maintaining the accuracy and usability of data delivered to stakeholders including evaluative reports to inform decision-making.
Communicate with IR and campus stakeholders making data requests and advise them about available data and the best uses of the data to meet their needs
Learn about IR data sources (e.g. ERS, APDB), operations, and processes.
Effectively use IR data sources to perform data operations on ERS and APDB for Chancellor’s Office and university-wide reporting as needed
Write queries, develop data management logic, integrate data sources, and build cleaned, standardized data sets for use in analyses and reports
As needed, analyze data for outcomes and conclusions related to the data request including conducting evaluation studies as deemed appropriate
On request, run relevant general statistical analyses related to the data request
Perform quality checks on own work and the work of other contributors when applicable
Leverage data visualization skills to develop user-friendly reports to communicate key trends related to business questions and strategic initiatives
Develop systematic reporting capabilities, documentation, and web-based sites related to institutional effectiveness
Coordinate special studies assigned by the Vice Provost for Institutional Effectiveness and Strategic Analytics or designate
Responsible for data processes including data definitions, operations, tools, strategy, etc. that ensure data usability, integrity, and consistency across different content areas
Manage the accessibility of institutional data in the IR databases
Create and make accessible relevant dictionaries and specifications of institutional data to be collected and maintained
Contribute relevant information to the data governance policies to ensure appropriate access and use of data
Provide documentation, user supports, and technical manuals for data access
Update or create new data elements to meet on-going reporting needs.
Monitor data quality and ensure data validity
Troubleshoot data issues, identify solutions, fix errors, and reconcile discrepancies across different data sources
Cross-functional collaborations with IT and internal partners for data migration, integration, and developing as well as implementing data governance policies of the Campus Data Warehouse (CDW)
Engage in complex data compilation, predictive modeling, statistics, and trend analysis activities in support of Institutional Research project goals and constituent functional needs
Proficient understanding of qualitative research design to support various studies that generate appropriate outcomes and produce meaningful reports to share
Conduct, coordinate research activities that may require analysis of multiple factors or data sources
Prepare oral and written informative, comprehensible, and formatted reports of research findings and make presentations to facilitate the interpretation of data to key campus constituencies, on request and proactively
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Comprehensive knowledge of database management systems and skilled programming abilities in SQL or other data query languages
Proficient with Tableau and other BI tools. Experience with writing scripts to create reports with a detail-oriented approach to data visualization
Comprehensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical proficiency in online reporting, web development, and content management
Comprehensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical proficiency in client-server management and general knowledge of network operating system and network architectures, configuration, and protocols in both hardware and software applications
Ability to design, develop and maintain online reporting applications and unit-level and department-level websites in order to provide statistical and analytical reports to support internal management needs as well as for Federal and State reporting requirements
Detailed knowledge of campus data sources and definitions, including ERS census extracts and PeopleSoft sources
Ability to apply general statistical techniques, such as tests of difference and association (e.g., t-tests, ANOVA, correlation, regression)
General knowledge of SPSS, SAS, Stata, and / or R to perform basic statistical analyses
Thorough knowledge of the techniques and treatment of data such as simple correlation methods, trend analysis, frequency distribution analysis, sampling techniques, hypothesis testing, and methods of interval estimation familiarity with the principles of personnel management and effective supervision and ability to direct the work of others
Capable of working independently on complex assignments, collaborating with others, and making judgments about priorities
Ability to perform data management and stewardship to obtain desired results
Demonstrated ability to design application programs to meet user requirements optimizing the use of available resources

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university. Additional qualifying professional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Three years of progressively responsible technical research or statistical experience including or supplemented by one year in the interpretation and graphic presentation of data.
Graduate study in the social sciences, economics, mathematics, statistics, public or business administration or engineering may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Master’s Degree in education, social sciences, economics, mathematics, statistics, public or business administration, computer or data science, or other related fields
Five or more years of experience in applying research design and data analytics or business intelligence models
Experience in understanding, manipulating, and querying large quantitative and qualitative data sets with complex file structure, and explaining complex data and research issues to technical and non-technical audiences
Advanced experience with SQL, Python, R, SAS, Stata, or SPSS
Expert experience in Tableau and qualitative software such as NVivo or the like
