Under the general direction of the Director of Residential Life, the Assistant Director for Academic Initiatives and Learning Communities is part of the Residential Life manager team and is responsible for the development and management of a comprehensive Residential Life Program for almost 4,200 residents and staff living in University Housing Services.
The program includes the day to day operation of four residence halls housing 2,325 first year students and two apartment complexes housing 1,750 upper division students, graduate students, faculty, and staff.
This Assistant Director position provides general guidance, direction, and oversight for the Residential Life Academic Staff which comprises 2 Coordinators for Academics (APC SSP IV) and student assistant staff members.
The Assistant Director for Academic Initiatives and Learning Communities has significant responsibility for implementing initiatives focused on student learning and academic success, Theme Communities, Living and Learning Communities, faculty partnerships, Faculty in Residence, tutoring and academic programs, first year experience, and student retention and persistence efforts.
The position is also responsible for administrative duties, budget, crisis management, communication within and outside the university, and works cooperatively with all UHS staff in support and implementation of the UHS mission.
The Assistant Director for Academic Initiatives and Learning Communities position requires political acumen as it interfaces with faculty, administrators, media, legal counsel, President’s Cabinet, students’ families, and other key stakeholders.
This position also involves complex collaboration with a variety of entities including, but not limited to Student Affairs, Counseling Services, Student Health and Wellness, academic colleges, Student Involvement, Student Retention, Project Succeed and campus auxiliaries.
This is a live on position that participates in a 24 / 7 year round on call duty rotation along with other Live On Residential Life Managers providing crisis management and emergency response.
Create and provide direction for academic initiatives within the Residential Curriculum that is grounded in Student Development theory and related to the University curriculum
Research, develop, and make recommendations for academic programs in the residence hall system and serves as an academic resource
In conjunction with the Assistant Director of Assessment and Planning, assist with the assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of academic programs for residents and student staff
Oversee the Spartan Hub which includes : staffing, collaboration with university colleges to offer tutoring and advising for students, coordination with campus departments to provide resources and services, and development of lifelong learning initiatives
Partner with Peer Connections for the design, implementation, coordination, and delivery of tutorial assistance and peer mentoring within the Spartan Hub in Housing
Provide oversight for the Early Alert program for residential students in Housing, support intervention initiatives, and collaborate with campus efforts
Develop and oversee a multi-faceted Faculty in Residence program within University Housing
Coordinate Faculty in Residence program recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation
Manage communication amongst Academic Affairs, Faculty in Residence, Student Affairs, and Residential Life staff as appropriate
Work collaboratively with Faculty in Residence to develop marketing and implementation strategies to recruit additional faculty and encourage faculty involvement in the residence halls
Cultivate additional faculty partnerships to support student retention and success
Oversee the Theme and Living Learning Communities which includes development of current and new communities; coordination and implementation of designed Theme and Living Learning Community curriculum based on national best practices
Develop goals, learning outcomes and objectives relating to implementation of programs, services, and student staff training
Create a First Year Experience program within the first year student residence halls. Implement a six-week student development plan / seminar to address first year student needs : transition, personal growth and academic support
Design and implement innovative initiatives based on emerging research and best practices that create community, integrate living and learning principles, and connect students to university resources to meet changing needs of diverse student populations
Work with the Residential Life team overseeing, selecting, training, and evaluating student staff in meeting UHS mission and values;
connecting student growth and development to specific Theme and Living Learning Community learning outcomes
Directs and supervises the Coordinator for Academic Success and Coordinator for Academic Strategies and Tutoring as well as the Faculty in Residence cohort
Responds as live on first administrative contact for crisis intervention and management with Residential Life Coordinators on call 24 hours a day
Alternates assuming 24-hour on-call duty with the other live-on Assistant Directors, ensuring continuous coverage for all residences
Assumes full range of Residential Life management duties and program responsibilities in the absence of the Director for Residential Life
Assists with the oversight and participates in day-to- day operations of Residential Life program and the Academic Initiatives Program and Team

Demonstrated experience in operations and systems analysis, statistical and research methods
Ability to interpret and evaluate results to develop sound conclusions and recommend new or revised policies
Ability to understand, interpret, and apply policies and regulations in specific situations to analyze and solve organizational and operating problems related to student and residential community housing needs
Ability to develop, propose, and effectively administer annual budgets
A valid California driver’s license is required within three months of the date of hire for the operation of any vehicle required for this position
Ability to complete the Defensive Drivers Training Program provided by the State of California for CSU campuses
Knowledge of various software applications to include word processing, presentations, and spreadsheets and databases
General knowledge of the personal and social problems typically encountered by college students
Ability to research current trends and best practices in academic development and support, Living Learning Communities, and faculty partnerships.
Excellent written and oral communication skills

Demonstrated supervisory experience and working knowledge of managerial techniques

Master’s Degree required from a four year college or university in Higher Education or a related field
3 years of progressive residence hall experience
