Reporting to the Clinic Manager of the Student Wellness Center (SWC), the Medical Assistant performs a variety of medical services for students at the Student Wellness Center in the Health Services department.
The incumbent works according to established protocols to provide direct nursing care for registered students and, occasionally, limited care for work-related injuries of university employees.
Within a modern health, counseling, and wellness facility, the SWC provides medical services with operations similar to those of a large group practice.
Among the outpatient medical services are primary and urgent care; evaluation, treatment, and guidance for individual health concerns;
family planning; nutrition; mental health; psychiatry; sports medicine; podiatry; dermatology; and comprehensive campus health advocacy and promotion.
Allied health services include laboratory, pharmacy, physical therapy, and x-ray. In addition, the SWC provides limited urgent care and referral assistance for employee work-related injuries and may provide first aid to visitors.
Apply specialized training and paraprofessional nursing skills to serve patients and assist professional staff
Interview patients, make observations, and ascertain appropriate processing or referral
Obtain vital signs. Perform screening under direction of Clinic Manager and registered nurses
Record pertinent symptoms and obtain a brief medical history on the majority of patients seen at the Wellness Center
Make appropriate entries in patients’ electronic medical records
Administer immunizations, TB tests, and certain medications under the guidelines of standardized procedures
Order x-rays and lab work (as needed) according to a standing order policy
Prepare and assist patients for examinations
Assist physicians and nurse practitioners with procedures and give treatment as ordered. Complete semi-skilled tasks such as electrocardiograms, vision and hearing screening tests, and spirometry
Answer patients’ questions, including by telephone, consulting with physicians, nurse practitioners, administrators, or other staff as needed
Clean and stock work area with medication or supplies and notify Clinic Manager if stock is short, depleted, or expired
Sterilize equipment and maintain supplies and instruments in order
Daily infection control responsibilities
Provide health education and counseling to patients
Consult and collaborate with other staff as needed
Assist the Clinic Manager in conducting new hire orientation
Participate in staff meetings, in-service training, and AAAHC Accreditation. Also participate in SWC committees and health education projects, as needed
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of daily clinic operations; aseptic techniques, and requirements
Ability to use application and proper operation of various medical supplies and equipment
General knowledge of anatomy and physiology appropriate to the duties assigned
Ability to understand the potential hazards or complications resulting from administering medications and how to initiate emergency procedures
Ability to demonstrate the proper techniques in administering medications in a variety of manners including intramuscular, intradermal, or subcutaneous methods and by inhalation
Knowledge of proper techniques in performing injections and phlebotomy; competency in performing assigned medical technical support services such as the standard tests and limited procedures described above
Maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff
Knowledge of the techniques for collecting and compiling data and the means of disseminating educational information to the campus community through various mass and audio or visual media
Knowledge of software applications such as word processing, power point, excel, publisher, database management, and electronic record keeping
Ability to conduct research using a variety of sources to develop and prepare educational and assessment materials
Ability to understand problems from a broader perspective, anticipate impact and adjust accordingly
Ability to troubleshoot most office administration problems and respond to all inquiries and requests related to work area
Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures independently, and use judgment and discretion to act when precedents do not exist
Ability to perform accurately in a detailed-oriented environment. Ability to proof accuracy of entered / recorded information and numbers (amount, time, codes)
Demonstrated ability to write analytical reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals
High school diploma or equivalent or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities While Medical Assistants are not certified, registered, or licensed in the State of California, the Medical Board of California requires that medical assistants complete specific types and hours of training to perform the duties outlined in their scope of practice.
This training must be documented and a physician or other qualified teacher, as identified by the Medical Board of California, must certify in writing that the Medical Assistant has completed the training successfully.
CSU-specific requirements are as follows :
Most commonly, incumbents are required to possess a certificate of completion from an accredited and approved medical assisting program through the Department of Education or Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education within the Department of Consumer Affairs.
In this case, the supervising CSU physician must verify competencies. OR;
At the discretion of the student wellness center director, an in-house campus-training program may be developed according to the guidelines established by the Medical Board of California.
In this case, a CSU physician must document and certify in writing that the formal training and clinical practice hours required by the Medical Board of California to perform the duties of a Medical Assistant have been completed successfully
NOTE : If a Medical Assistant is performing phlebotomy outside the regular scope of practice, appropriate phlebotomy certification may be required by the State of California
