Job Summary

  • Reporting to and receiving limited supervision from the Director of the Accessible Education Center (AEC), the Academic Advising Counselor / Coordinator works independently to provide academic advisement, strategies, interventions, and confidential counseling for students with disabilities;
  • participates in Case Management meetings; serves as the Lead for AEC’s Admission Appeal; makes referrals to and works in cooperation with a wide variety of SJSU academic support offices, community services, agencies, high schools and post-secondary institutions;
  • advocates on behalf of the University; acts as a resource to the greater campus and community at large.

    Key Responsibilities

  • General education advisor in compliance with CSU and ADA requirements relating to Title II Institutions
  • Provides academic advisement, one-on-one counseling, disability management, and academic support to students with a focus of disability management
  • Participates in Case Management and prescribes accommodations to students with various disabilities
  • Acts as liaison to the faculty for students with disabilities and works closely with faculty and department chairs to ensure the effective delivery of these services
  • Acts as a liaison to on and off-campus programs that provide academically related support ensuring accessibility for students with disabilities in those programs
  • Liaison with high school and community college counselors, faculty, and administrators to facilitate transfer to SJSU
  • Liaison to the Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) providing academic, admissions and support services to DOR consumers
  • Liaison to Intercollegiate Athletics for academic support and accommodations for student athletes both prospective and matriculated
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act as it relates to services at a public institution of higher education
  • Ability to work effectively with academic administrators, faculty and staff, as well as the various governing bodies of the university, and the outside agencies that interact with it
  • Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action
  • Ability to advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters
  • Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related
  • Four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.
  • A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.

    A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job-related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.

  • Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Higher Education, or a related field
  • Experience working with students having disability conditions and their impact on students’ ability to learn and participate in the collegiate experience
  • Experience in higher education system

    Classification : Student Services Professional IV

    Anticipated Hiring Range : $5,400 / month - $6,100 / month

    CSU Salary Range : $5,351 / month - $7,633 / month

    Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.
