    Positions & Duties

    The Departmentof Transportation is seeking a seasoned construction professional for theSenior Construction Inspector (SCI) position in the Pavement & ADAInspection section within the following : Pavement, Trees and Sidewalk, andLandscape Maintenance.

    Under thesupervision of a Principal Construction Inspector (PCI), this person will leada small team of Associate Construction Inspectors (ACIs) and collaborate withengineers in the development and delivery of pavement maintenance andrehabilitation projects throughout the City in accordance with City standardplans and specifications.

    The SCI will manage contracts, track work progress,and interact with contractors, engineering staff, and members of the public.

    SCIs are responsible for clear documentation in daily logs, daily reports, andother forms that support accurate records of work performed.

    Additionally,all SCIs support the development and review of maintenance specifications, aswell as other programs in the Department of Transportation.

    The SCI is asupervisory position and will oversee the activities of Associate ConstructionInspectors.

    Education : Successfulcompletion of high school or equivalent (General Education Development GED Test or California Proficiency Certificate)

  • Experience : Six(6) years of increasingly responsible sub-professional engineering / constructioninspection work, including two (2) years preparing engineering drawings,contract specifications, and cost estimates;
  • drafting and structural detailingfor plans; construction or infrastructure inspection; or field surveying.

    Acceptable Substitutions : Completionof a terminal curriculum in engineering technology or equivalent to that givenin an accredited California junior college or two (2) years of collegeengineering course may be substituted for two (2) years of sub-professional engineering / construction inspection experience.

    Licenses or Certificates : Possession of a validdriver's license in the State of California.

    Theideal candidate will possess the following competencies, as demonstrated inpast and current employment history. Desirable competencies for this position include :

    For Associate Construction Inspectors, thisincludes, but is not limited to :

  • Knowledge of principles, techniques, andterminology related to pavement, concrete, landscape maintenance, treemaintenance and / or capital improvement construction;
  • Knowledge of principles, techniques, andterminology related to construction materials sampling and testing;
  • Ability to administer maintenancecontracts and programs, including experience in the pay letter and invoiceprocessing;
  • and knowledge of basic mathematics including addition, subtraction,multiplication and division.

  • Communication Skills - Effectively conveys information and expresses thoughtsand facts clearly, orally and in writing; demonstrates effective use oflistening skills;
  • displays openness to other people’s ideas and thoughts.

    CustomerService - Demonstratesthe ability to anticipate customers' needs and deliver services effectively andefficiently using professional demeanor.

    Computer Skills - experienced with common business computer applications including but notlimited to : MS Outlook, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Excel.

    Theselection process will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's training andexperience based on the application and responses to the Job SpecificQuestions.

  • drafting and structural detailing forplans; construction or infrastructure inspection; or field surveying.
