  • Positions & Duties

    The San Jose Police Department is acceptingapplications for the Public Safety RadioDispatcher Trainee position AND the Public SafetyCommunication Specialist position.

    Public Safety Communication Specialist - salary range is : $67,995.20 - $82,617.60 annually.

    Public Safety Dispatcher Trainee's earn $72,966.40annually. After training is completed, the salary range is : $81,036.80 -$98,488.00 annually.

    NOTE : In addition to the starting salary,employees in the Public Safety Radio Dispatcher Trainee and Public SafetyCommunication Specialist classifications shall also receive an approximate fivepercent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable pay.

    Hiring Incentive Pilot Program forPublic Safety Communications Specialist :

    Upon hire of candidate as a Public Safety CommunicationsSpecialist (FT) on or after February 9, 2020, he or she shallbe eligible to receive a non-pensionable lump sum payment of $1,500.

    Once the employee completes their one (1) year probation as a Public Safety Communications Specialist (FT) he or she is eligibleto receive a final non-pensionable lump sum payment of $1,500.

    Please note : The candidate receiving theincentive would be required to refund the ENTIRE non-pensionable lump sum (upto $3,000) if the employee separates from City employment or accepts anotherposition within the City prior to their one (1) year anniversary of passingprobation as a Public Safety Communications Specialist (FT).

  • Position & Duties - Public SafetyCommunication Specialist

    The Public Safety Communication Specialist position is an entry level trainingposition in the Communications Unit for the Police Department.

    PublicSafety Communication Specialists are required to handle the full range oftelephone answering and dispatch functions.

    This recruitment may be used to fill multiplepositions in this, or other divisions or departments. If you areinterested in employment in this classification, you should apply to ensure youare considered for additional opportunities that may utilize the applicantsfrom this recruitment.

  • Mandatory overtime will be required duringcritical incidents or to maintain staffing levels. Wearing a uniform isrequired;
  • however, uniform expenses are partially reimbursed. The wearingof a headset is also required and is purchased by the employer.

    Incumbents receive paid training beginning on their first day attending theBasic Dispatch Academy.

    These positions may require assignments to aSwing, Graveyard, or other non-standard shift; most work four 10-hour shiftsfollowed by three days off.

    There is a shift differential payment of$1.50 / hour for Swing Shift and $1.75 / hour for Graveyard Shift.

    Position & Duties - Public SafetyRadio Dispatcher Trainee

    The Public Safety Radio DispatcherTrainee position is an entry level training position in theCommunications Unit of the Police Department.

    The key responsibilitiesfor Public Safety Radio Dispatcher Trainee include :

  • Learning to dispatch police personnel andequipment on both routine and emergency calls utilizing the computer aideddispatch system, video display terminals, radio dispatching consoles, andrelated equipment;
  • Answering the telephone and receiving emergency,non-emergency, and 9-1-1 requests for assistance; Inquiring, interpreting,verifying, receiving, and disseminating information from law enforcementcomputer networks relating to wanted persons, stolen property, vehicleregistration, etc;
  • Participating in field training exercises as needed tofully develop dispatching skills; Performing all related learning and testingactivities.

    Formal training in the classroom and in thefield will be provided in order to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilitiesnecessary to perform the public safety dispatching functions.

    PublicSafety Radio Dispatcher Trainees must complete the training program and beappointed to the class of Public Safety Radio Dispatcher in order to retainemployment.

    Successful candidates must demonstrate excellentcommunication skills, strong customer service skills, and the ability to retaincomposure and work accurately under pressure in emergency situations.

    Candidates that are appointed will be requiredto attend the Basic Dispatch Academy for eight (8) weeks. Candidates arepaid when they begin academy training.

    After the academy, candidates willcontinue on-the-job training, rotating through a number of assignments andshifts. After successfully completing this portion of the trainingprogram, Candidates will begin a five (5) week Radio Academy and trainingprogram as a Public Safety Radio Dispatcher.

    Qualifications

    Education : Successful completion of high school, General Education (GED) Certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate.

    Experience : Public Safety Communication Specialist - One year (1) experience working in public contact employment. (1yr FT 2,080 hours) Public Safety Radio Dispatcher Trainee - One year (1) of experience receiving, processing and / or dispatching calls in a radio dispatch or call center OR three years (3) of experience working in public contact employment.

    3yrs FT 6,240 hours) NOTE : Public contact employment is defined as customer service, a call center, or a closely related field where substantial face-to-face or over-the phone contact was made with the public.

    Selection Process

    The selection process will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's training and experience based on the application and responses to the Job Specific Questions.

    Only those candidates whose background best match the position will be forwarded to the next phase of the selection process, which includes an Information Session, Computer Practical (CRITICALL) and Oral Interview.

    Applicants deemed most competitive after oral interviews will be required to pass a police background investigation, which includes polygraph and psychological screening.

    Mandatory Information Session : Attending Information session is mandatory to move forward to the CRITICALL Exam. The Information Session provides applicants with more details regarding the day to day duties of the position(s) and an overall understanding of the hiring and training process as well as information regarding the Background Process and requirements.

    Computer Practical (CRITICALL) : The City of San Jose Police Department administers the Criticall Exam during the recruitment process.

    The CRITICALL exam is a Pass / Fail computer practical where applicants listen to a series of taped exercises, which require applicants to rapidly and accurately process simulated dispatch information.
