Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Student Conduct and Ethical Development, the Associate Director assists with the administration of the student conduct process at San Jose State University and is responsible for the investigation and adjudication of alleged violations of the Student Conduct Code.

The Associate Director is responsible for adjudicating an independent caseload that will include academic and non-academic violations.

Under limited supervision of the Director, the Associate Director will receive and investigate reports of alleged violations of the Student Conduct Code and the Student Organizational Code of Conduct and will perform investigations, adjudicate cases, and recommend outcomes.

The nature of the work performed by the Associate Director is highly sensitive and requires interpretation of CSU and university policies and procedures.

This position works collaboratively with numerous offices and may develop and present workshops and other educational programs to students, faculty, and staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receives and investigates reports of alleged academic and non-academic misconduct from incidents occurring on and off campus
  • Adjudicates alleged violations of the Student Conduct Code and Student Organization Code of Conduct in accordance with CSU and SJSU policies and procedures
  • Utilizes an educational philosophy when adjudicating conduct cases
  • Independently manages assigned cases from inception through completion ensuring compliance with timelines, due process, and policies
  • Drafts, reviews, and sends relevant correspondence for assigned cases
  • Conducts informal and formal proceedings concerning alleged violations of the student and organization conduct codes
  • Represents the University or assists at formal proceedings (hearings)
  • Maintains accurate and up to date records of cases and proceedings in Maxient (Student Conduct Database
  • Creates and develops trainings, workshops, and sanctions to support the prevention and outreach efforts of Student Conduct and Ethical Development
  • Assists with the overall management and operations of Student Conduct and Ethical Development
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to assess and negotiate complex, highly sensitive situations
  • Awareness of federal and state compliance expectations, including FERPA, Clery, VAWA, and Title IX
  • Superb oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to independently produce high quality work with attention to detail
  • Ability to learn / use Maxient database
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively work with diverse populations
  • Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in conflict resolution, higher education, student affairs, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Three to five years of progressively responsible experience. At least two years of recent, substantive work experience with investigations, adjudicating Student Conduct and Organizational Conduct, managing confidential information, and independently and efficiently managing a significant caseload.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Five to Seven years of graduate or professional experience in student conduct, Title IX, conflict resolution or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience adjudicating and investigating student conduct violations, organizational violations, and Title IX violations in a college or university setting
  • Experience with current issues in the field of student conduct and the role of student conduct in a public university setting
  • Experience with conflict resolution or mediation
  • Experience developing workshops, sanctions, or programs
  • Experience working with students in crisis situations
  • Experience problem solving, interviewing, and investigating
