Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Program Director of the Black Leadership and Opportunity Center (BLOC), the Program Coordinator is responsible for providing support with the planning, coordination, implementation, and assessment of student success programs and workshops that serve students of African-American / Black descent and celebrates their heritage / culture.

The Program Coordinator will work collaboratively with internal and external partners and stakeholders that will make it possible for programs and activities to be sustained.

Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate student undergraduate and graduate interns in a manner that empowers them to lead their own special projects and achieve desired outcomes.

Create a welcoming, friendly, and affirming cultural academic space within the center that values, respects, and promotes an appreciation for the diverse African-American / Black communities at SJSU.

The Program Coordinator will coordinate all center marketing, publicity, social media efforts. Works jointly with the rest of the center’s professional and student staff to coordinate the daily operations of the center, including the facilitation and hosting of campus visits by precollegiate programs, middle schools, and high schools.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development, planning, coordination, and assessment of multiple academic and other student success programs, events, activities, and workshops designed to support student transition and retention
  • Assist with the development of programs that create a student success oriented atmosphere for African-American / Black students on campus
  • Collaborate with campus entities on events that promote multicultural understanding, academic success, alliance, and civic engagement.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of high-impact programs in relation to retention and graduation
  • Identify, build, and maintain relationships with affinity African-American / Black groups, including recognized student organizations and interest groups to enhance center presence in the BLOC Programming Board Community Meetings) to implement programming plans and identify additional collaborative partnerships for promoting and executing AABSSC efforts and initiatives
  • Assist with the coordination of outreach efforts with SOAR, Admitted Spartan Day, University Orientation Programs, and Weeks of Welcome
  • Represent Program Director and the BLOC at meetings, campus events, and community meetings as needed and identify professional development opportunities which enhance promotes career development at SJSU
  • Provide consultation and support the needs of students and make referrals to the appropriate resources on and off campus
  • Coordinates day-to-day operations of the BLOC Center, including front-desk coverage, event calendar management and scheduling
  • Supervise, guide, and help to develop student employees in their social, leadership, academic, and identity development;
  • Advocate for their holistic well-being

  • Assist in the development of culturally appropriate marketing and publicity materials such as flyers, emails, newsletters, posters, presentations, brochures, videos, websites, and social media platforms
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of and skill working with historically underserved student communities.
  • Knowledge of multicultural and identity development and frameworks for related diversity trainings.
  • Ability to prepare various documents including operations manuals and procedures, program and activity schedules, proposals, and monitor budgets.
  • Ability to advise potential students, parents, high school and community college staff individually and in-group settings.
  • Ability to apply high-level analytical skills to take effective action while independently carrying out assigned responsibilities.
  • Ability to promote, organize and facilitate group meetings.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize multiple work priorities and organize various projects and to follow safety and confidentiality protocols.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends
  • Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field
  • Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field
  • Two or more years of professional experience in higher education or student affairs
  • Experience working with faculty, staff, and students in higher education
  • Experience with (i.e. PeopleSoft, FileMaker Pro, Excel Spreadsheet) or comparable databases
  • Experience processing administrative transactions
  • 2-3 years of experience working with African American / Black students
  • Two years of related professional work experience
  • One year of supervising student assistants

    Classification : Student Services Professional II

    Anticipated Hiring Range : $4,304 / month - $4,395 / month

    Salary Range : $4,304 / month - $6,120 / month
