Job Summary

The Optical Systems Development Engineer is responsible for developing novel lidar technologies that will enable Velodyne Lidar systems to continue to lead in the autonomous vehicle, advanced driver assistance systems, mapping and industrial markets.

The Optical Systems Development Engineer must thoroughly understand the key physics underpinning lidar technologies and be an expert at moving a project from concept to prototype and production.

Thorough system level understanding and hands on experience with optics, electronics, signals and mechanical design are paramount.

The ideal candidate must be equally comfortable working in and alternatively leading small teams to develop concepts to prototype and not afraid to the challenges in shepherding products into production and comfortable owning a project and taking full responsibilities for its success.

The Optical Systems Development Engineer is also responsible for proactively developing new technologies and keeping abreast of the latest developments in the market as well as assessing potential competing technologies and guiding company strategy.

Job Responsibilities

  • Architect and design new products and make improvements to existing products. The design includes opto-mechanical and mechanical concept development, mechanical system architecture, mechanical system trade-off analysis, thermal and stress analysis, and tolerance analysis.
  • Optimize existing designs for manufacturability and cost reduction.
  • Evaluate products, parts, and process for cost efficiency and reliability.
  • Works with other members of the engineering and operations staff to ensure that products are developed to meet all performance and quality standards in a timely matter.
  • Develop tooling and fixtures for assembly and process development.
  • Help develop procedures, processes, and work instruction.
  • Root cause analysis and product / process improvement.
  • Maintain detailed BoMs and BoM cost.
  • Work closely with vendors on negotiating specs and meeting cost requirements.
  • Job Requirements

  • 5 10 years industrial experience is preferred
  • Experience in the design and development of high tolerance, complex opto-mechanical products which achieve medium to high volume levels.
  • Experience with some or all of the following : optical design, micron level tolerances, solid state, fiber or gas lasers, FEA, DFM, FMEA, kinematics, thermal modeling, mounting of optical components, optical alignment, and fixture design.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Ability to interpret analysis and test results.
  • Knowledge and experience developing a product incorporating design for manufacturability (DFM) is highly desirable.
  • Proficient in SolidWorks or an equivalent mechanical design software package.
  • Proficient in Zemax or equivalent software package.
  • High tech experience within a fast-paced, start up environment.
  • Successful track record accomplishing desired results.
  • Effective, hard worker with a team player can-do approach.
  • Education Requirements :

  • BS, MS preferred in EE, ME, Physics, Optics or Lasers
