About the Role :
The Server Patching Engineer will be responsible for software / firmware patch deployment as well as patching standards and process to maintain infrastructure health across the enterprise environment.
The selected candidate will interface with Product Venders, Security, Application, Infrastructure and ITSM teams to coordinate VMware, server, storage patching deployments.
They will create and maintain operational procedures as needed to ensure patching success rates and will be the main point of communication for security patching.
Additionally, the candidate will interface with customers and management to conduct reviews and provide reporting on patching status and any trends seen to help improve the health of the environment.
What You’ll Do :
The engineer will be responsible for overseeing, tracking, and scheduling all server patching efforts for a large-scale enterprise environment within a large financial client.
The candidate will analyze vendor trends and latest firmware / software patch requirements across VMware ESX, Dell, Pure Storage and identify potential patching errors in all non-production and production environments while working with respective teams to ensure to coordinate patching cycles.
The patching administrator will also maintain and update all patching related maintenance windows with the business using ServiceNow.
Qualifications & Interests :
Implements and maintain "Best in Class" approaches / practices for enterprise patch management and deployment.
Assess software patches and create recommended patch list with logical explanation in terms of compliance.
Develop and optimize pre- and post- patching process to ensure proper implementation without any outages.
Score each patch based on risks & opportunity to prioritize. Identify which patches are more valuable to the organization than others.
Coordinate patch schedule with other teams such as patch team, infrastructure management, security operations, governance & risk.
Communicate project and operational metrics.
Works with cross functional teams to identify operational procedures and best practices in accordance with patch management strategy.
Ensures overall service levels for server uptimes through patch management standards, firmware upgrades and vendor based advisory.
Employs continual service improvement though monthly and quarterly patch management metrics reviews.
Analyzes trend data to identify potential patch related issues on various images and assists teams in troubleshooting to implement any resolutions / improvements needed for proactive resolution.
Updates and maintains enterprise patch maintenance windows in ticketing systems like ServiceNow
Develops automation scripts and programs to streamline manual patch operations and improve mean time to deliver and first-time right metrics.
Assist in implementation during patch maintenance windows and assists in documenting completion of the change.
Defines and assesses patching service levels and success rates.
Maintains ticket queues for new patching or change requests
Supports the determination of patches needed as well as implementation of corrective actions by doing thorough due diligence
Vendor Ecosystem VMware ESX, Dell OME, Pure Storage
Applies Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) framework knowledge combined with Agile principles
Escalates issues for resolution to appropriate teams when necessary.
This will require off hours work after business hours on weekdays and weekends to deploy selected patches in scheduled maintenance windows
