Job Summary

Under the limited supervision of the New Student and Family Programs Director, the First-Year Engagement Coordinator will play an integral role in the successful delivery of first-year (frosh and transfer) student engagement programming throughout the year.

The incumbent will provide campus leadership to programs related to first-year student success in collaboration with campus partners, which includes Spartan Village, a first year engagement program designed to foster community among the incoming frosh class and equip new students with the knowledge and resources they need to be successful.

The Coordinator will help lead the coordination, scheduling and assessment of various pre-college programs in support of special populations.

The Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating signature events for first year students including New Student Convocation.

Additionally, the incumbent will also be responsible for overseeing various communication and marketing strategies to support the success and retention of our first-year students in an effort to close equity gaps for our first generation, historically underrepresented populations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate our frosh engagement program called Spartan Village, which places frosh into various houses with house leaders to support their transition and retention
  • Lead the recruitment, selection, training and supervision of the Spartan Village House Leaders who are undergraduate student staff, and integrate them into the work of New Student and Family Programs
  • Plan and coordinate signature events and market other events for new transfer students that are relevant to their needs (academic, career, social, networking)
  • Create engagement campaigns each semester for new transfer students, connecting them to various resources, engagement, and career-related activities
  • Coordinate the New Student Newsletter for new students by creating content, organizing submissions, and managing deadlines.
  • Work with campus partners to create and send engaging content from the Career Center, Academic Advising, Housing, Student Wellness Center, UPD, Dining, and other areas of interest to new students

  • Update and maintain the NSFP website pages and new student outreach and marketing materials
  • Assist with the purchasing, assembly and creation of new student program materials (e.g., giveaways, daily schedule of events, handouts, evaluations, planners, promotional materials, etc)
  • Support with programming during move-in days / opening weekend, open house, yield events, and other programs as directed by the Program Director and Division of Student Affairs
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully plan and implement large scale events
  • Knowledge of programming, orientation, transition and retention
  • Strong fiscal, administrative, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to advise potential students, parents, high school and community college staff individually and in group settings
  • Knowledge and ability to utilize various software applications such as Word, Excel, and Google Drive with high degree of accuracy and speed.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of campus program development and major campus program planning; working knowledge of other student services programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to create programs that are responsive to a diverse and multicultural environment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours. Some evening and weekend hours are required.
  • Knowledge of crisis management and risk reduction strategies and appropriate responses.
  • Ability to possess a valid California Driver’s license at the time of hire, for the operation of any state vehicle required to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
  • A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.


    A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

    Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Higher Education, or Student Affairs

    Classification : Student Services Professional III

    Anticipated Hiring Range : Up to $4,750 / month

    CSU Hiring Range : $4,691 / month - $6,683 / month
