Job Summary
The Equipment Technician II, Mechanical repairs, maintains, designs, tests, and constructs various equipment. The incumbent also provides assistance to the Central Shops as appropriate.
Upon completion of the mandatory safety training courses, the incumbent will operate from the Department's shop located in the science building.
In the event that necessary tools are not available in the Department's shop, the work will be carried out in the College of Science Shop located inDuncan Hall.
The incumbent works with undergraduate and graduate students on various projects and instructs students on how to properly operate machine shop equipment under her / his supervision, adhering to the College of Science safety guidelines.
Reporting to the Associate Dean of Research and receiving work lead direction from the Department Chair of Physics and Astronomy, and also receiving work direction from the instructional support technician (IST III), works independently under the general supervision to provide support to the Physics Department.
Key Responsibilities
Constructs equipment in research labs from blueprints and / or verbal instructions from faculty members
Builds electro, thermo, and mechanical apparatuses for instructional labs by using lathes, mills, saw tables, band saw, drill press, and welding machining
Evaluates obsolete equipment in the department, then redesigns and constructs replacement equipment
Maintains and repairs mechanical equipment using hand and power tools to repair, replace, lubricate, and adjust parts.
Includes motors, pumps, and a variety of mechanical devices serviced as bench work or at the equipment locations site
Maintains, repairs (including major overhaul), and installs such equipment as heat and refrigeration equipment, pumps, motors, balances, centrifuges, mixers, separators, and mechanical devices used for technical instructional labs
Troubleshoots defective equipment following manufacturers’ instructions or standard techniques for electro-mechanical equipment
Sets up and takes down lab stations throughout the semester according to lab schedules
Tests and ensures functionality of lab apparatus(es)
Work with department lab coordinators in ensuring proper equipment has been installed for each lab station for the week
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Working knowledge of all machine and wood shop tools such as lathe, mill, saw, planer, welding equipment, etc., and experience using them
Must be able to lift 50 lbs
Strong oral communication skills
Must possess excellent customer services skills
Required Qualifications
Equivalent to two years of journey-level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair, and operation of scientific or technical equipment in the specialty area to which assigned such as mechanical, electromechanical, electronics or in the specialized category including construction and fabrication and some precision work or requiring trade or craft skills working with a variety of unique materials or equivalent to two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment or related experience in the type of equipment to which assigned as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for one year of the required experience or equivalent to two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in the type of equipment repair to which assigned, completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of a full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair for one year of the required experience
License
A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.
Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.
