Job Summary

The Graphic Designer supports San José State University’s commitment to increase online access to higher education for working adult learners, particularly focusing on providing students from historically underserved communities with opportunities to advance their education and obtain their degree in the Center for Faculty Development.

The Graphic Designer will support the effective use of current and emerging technologies to develop innovative and engaging e-learning environments as part of SJSU Online, a fully remote academic program that provides opportunity for students with some college credits to earn a bachelor's degree.

The Graphic Designer works to enhance the faculty’s use of educational technology in online environments through artistic concept and graphic design expertise in the creation of electronic and multimedia materials, and use of both design and production elements to organize ideas visually to convey the desired impact and message to target audiences.

The incumbent will work in close collaboration with faculty, SJSU Online Colleagues, and other campus units to design and develop high quality designs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serves as team member responsible for design aspects of SJSU Online courses
  • Selects and purchases graphic, photographic and printing materials and supplies
  • Serves as a key strategist and creative thinker in representing instructional concepts to enhance student learning; ensures that all design projects are integrated within SJSU Online’s brand identity.
  • Defines design criteria, develops graphic design concepts, and presents them for review to the instructional design team
  • Coordinates and art-directs (as needed) the services of freelance designers, photographers, illustrators, designers, student help and vendors
  • Creates concept-compositions, graphic designs, and layouts; refines final designs to meet the constraints of budgets, deadlines and client and / or management expectations
  • Identifies, selects and coordinates vendors for printing and production services, as appropriate to the project, including printers, other designers, marketing specialists and others to ensure the successful completion of projects, on time and on budget
  • Provides technical advice and guidance, and serves as liaison with production personnel, publishers, clients and others involved with the project
  • Responsible for the day-to-day graphic design operations and for the execution applied to the development of communications and marketing themes and materials
  • Makes recommendations to produce, and continually evolve and improve communication and publications produced by SJSU Online in terms of concept, strategy, vision, and visual design;
  • functions as a strategist, analyst, art director, creator and monitor of communications and marketing initiatives related to SJSU Online

  • Provides broad creative direction and creative oversight within CFD + eCampus SJSU Online programs and initiatives, facilitating creative collaboration among units and ensuring cohesive executive of a wide range of print and online materials
  • Assists CFD + eCampus SJSU Online staff with the adoption and implementation of both university and SJSU Online brand identity
  • Develops ePub and other format communications for smartphones and tablet devices
  • Provides expertise in communication strategy for social media campaigns
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to enhance web-based courses with knowledge of best practices and e-learning principles
  • Thorough knowledge and demonstrable skills in applying a variety of software applications and web-based authoring and publishing systems : e.
  • g., Camtasia, Photoshop, HTML editors, Zoom, Microsoft Office

  • Ability to develop designs that comply with accessibility as defined in Section 508.
  • Expert skills and knowledge in graphic design practice, including project planning, art direction, layout, prepress production, ink and paper selection, digital and offset printing
  • Expert in knowledge of visual design theory including : composition, color, hierarchy, and typography
  • Advanced proficiency with InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
  • Ability to prepare camera-ready materials and a working knowledge of design and electronic prepress processes used in the production of complex publications
  • Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and / or equivalent, in graphic design, fine arts, or a related field of study
  • Two years of full-time experience with graphic application and publishing tools required
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent training
  • Five or more years of Graphic Design work experience
  • Experience indicating strong consultative and persuasive skills in presenting branding and design concepts to clients and partners
  • Experience in graphic design practice, including project planning, art direction, layout, prepress production, ink and paper selection, digital and offset printing
  • Experience handling multiple work priorities, organizing, and planning work and projects
  • Experience in educational technology, instructional design, distributed learning, or an equivalent discipline
  • Experience using and managing Learning Management Systems
  • Experience with social media platforms
  • Experience with technical information systems and application program packages
  • Experience and a working knowledge of common software application packages used in higher education teaching
  • Experience in course development and design
  • Experience in a team-based environment
  • Experience in teaching workshops in higher education

    Classification : Graphic Designer II

    Anticipated Hiring Range : $4,500 / month - $4,800 / month

    CSU Hiring Range : $3,717 / month - $6,726 / month
