Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Program Director for Asian Pacific Islander Desi / American Student Success Center, the Program Coordinator is responsible for providing support with the planning, coordination, implementation, and assessment of student success programs and workshops that serve students of APID / A descent and celebrates their heritage / culture.

The Program Coordinator will work collaboratively with internal and external partners and stakeholders that will make it possible for programs and activities to be sustained.

Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate student undergraduate and graduate interns in a manner that empowers them to lead their own special projects and achieve desired outcomes.

Create a welcoming, friendly, and affirming cultural academic space within the center that values, respects, and promotes an appreciation for the diverse APID / A communities at SJSU.

The Program Coordinator will coordinate all center marketing, publicity, social media efforts. Works jointly with the rest of the center’s professional and student staff to coordinate the daily operations of the center, including the facilitation and hosting of campus visits by precollegiate programs, middle schools, and high schools.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development, planning, coordination, and assessment of multiple academic and other student success programs, events, activities, and workshops designed to support student transition and retention.
  • Identify, build, and maintain relationships with affinity APID / A groups, including recognized student organizations and interest groups to enhance center presence in the APID / A Student Success Center Programming Board Community Meetings to implement programming plans and identify additional collaborative partnerships for promoting and executing APID / A Student Success Center efforts and initiatives.
  • Develop a Student Success Manual for student intern / ambassadors to be used during training and or staff retreats.
  • Responsible for maintaining records and summary reports of all APID / A Student Success Center programming, activities, and events to be submitted monthly.
  • Provide support, advocacy, intervention, and referrals to students in need of retention services and resources.
  • Coordinates day-to-day operations of the APID / A Student Success Center, including front-desk coverage, event calendar management and scheduling.
  • Collects, analyze and maintains data to be used for statistical reporting for the Program Director
  • Works jointly with STARS Administrative Budget Analyst and Program Director to monitor unit operational expenses and budget.
  • Responsible for recruitment, hiring, training, directing, supervision, and evaluation of undergraduate and graduate student interns.
  • Supervise, guide, and help to develop student employees in their social, leadership, academic, and identity development;
  • Advocate for their holistic well-being.

  • Writes, edits, and manages content on center website.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of and skill working with historically underserved student communities
  • Knowledge of assessment techniques and ability to develop cohesive reports.
  • Ability to use a broad range of computer skills and software
  • Ability to prepare various documents including operations manuals and procedures, program and activity schedules, proposals, and monitor budgets
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to advise potential students, parents, high school and community college staff individually and in group settings
  • Excellent customer service and public relation skills
  • Ability to effectively prioritize multiple work priorities and organize various projects and to follow safety and confidentiality protocols
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends
  • Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job related field
  • Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 2-3 years of experience working with APID / A students
  • Experience developing and interpreting PeopleSoft reports.
  • Experience processing administrative transactions.
  • Experience with (i.e. PeopleSoft, FileMaker Pro, Excel Spreadsheet) or comparable databases.
  • Experience working with faculty, staff, and students in higher education
  • One year of supervising student assistants
  • Two or more years of professional experience in higher education or student affairs.
  • Two years of related professional work experience

    Classification : Student Services Professional II

    Anticipated Hiring Range : $4,304 / month - $4,545 / month

    CSU Salary Range : $4,304 / month - $6,120 / month
