Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of the Education Opportunity Program and in collaboration with departments within the University, the EOP Academic Advisor promotes San Jose State University's (SJSU) commitment to the Educational Opportunity Program.

Working independently under limited supervision, this position will advise and support EOP students to ensure the retention, persistence, and success of the students in the program.

This position works collaboratively with other departments within the Student Success unit to support enrollment, program development, and overall student success for first generation, low-income, and historically disadvantaged students.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide holistic academic advising for new, continuing and returning EOP students which may include foster youth alumni, high school, and community college students
  • EOP academic advising services include general education, academic and educational planning in partnership with major academic advisors, undeclared and success center advising services, CSU probation / disqualification policies, and appropriate referral to other academic support offices
  • Utilizes effective advising and coaching techniques to assist students with sensitive issues pertaining to academic and non-academic needs
  • Assist in coordinating workshops (academic & personal enhancement workshops) and programs and EOP outreach efforts
  • Collaborates with relevant campus offices and staff who assist EOP by providing information and services in support of EOP students
  • Plans, organizes, coordinates, and participates in various presentation / visitation programs including on-site visits to high schools and community colleges.
  • Coordinates the recruitment visits

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to interpret and explain policies to various staff members and members of the public
  • Thorough knowledge of individual counseling techniques and general knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned
  • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters
  • Ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature
  • General knowledge of English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling to be able to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports
  • Thorough knowledge of software applications : word processing, spreadsheet, and database management
  • Ability to interpret information from a variety of institutions, including foreign institutions, with differing record systems
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required during heavy periods
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent customer service and public relations skills
  • May be required to travel to other geographic locations and work on some evening and weekend hours
  • Must possess a valid California Driver’s license at the time of hire, for the operation of any state vehicle required to perform the essential functions of the job
  • Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
  • A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.


    A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

    Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Educational Counseling, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, or related field.
  • 1-2 years academic advising experience, preferably with first generation college students.
  • Experience with higher education academic advising policies and procedures.

    Classification : Student Services Professional III

    Anticipated Hiring Range : $4,691 / month - $4,799 / month

    CSU Salary Range : $4,691 / month - $6,683 / month
