The Department of Psychology at San José State (SJSU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Clinical Psychology with scholarly expertise in the area of health and wellness in communities of color, broadly defined.

The vision of the Psychology Department is to provide high-quality education in psychology that fosters the development of students so that they will make worthy contributions to society.

We value a student-centered approach that emphasizes teaching, research, and applied training. The Department offers a BA in Psychology, MS Clinical Psychology, MS Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and MA in Research and Experimental Psychology.

Required Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA-accredited university, with training as a clinical scientist or scientist-practitioner, by August 2021
  • Either a licensed psychologist or license eligible in California by the position start date, with the expectation of licensure within 2-3 years of hire.
  • Demonstrated scholarly productivity in the scientific study of issues related to health and wellness in communities of color, broadly defined,.
  • Commitment to, and demonstrated potential for, teaching excellence at the undergraduate level and within the MS Clinical Psychology graduate program.
  • Ability to take active teaching, mentoring, and clinical supervision roles in the MS Clinical Psychology program.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collegial atmosphere of shared governance.
  • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in the area of child, couples, and / or family therapy (in both research and training).
  • Research or applied experience related to implementing evidence-based practices in community mental health and / or school-based settings.
  • Commitment to seeking external funding to support research-related activities and / or to enhance student learning.
  • Responsibilities

    San José State University is a teaching institution that values mentored research. This position involves duties related to teaching, research, and service to the Department and University.


    Teaching responsibilities for this position will include undergraduate and graduate coursework in clinical psychology, the candidate’s area of specialization, and as needed by the department.

    Undergraduate courses may include writing in psychology, statistics, research methods, psychopathology (child and / or adult), clinical psychology, and introductory psychology.

    The MS Clinical Psychology graduate program is rooted in evidence-based practice and seeks to train master’s level psychotherapists consistent within that framework.

    Graduate course responsibilities may include teaching child or adult psychopathology, family and couples therapy, lifespan development, psychology of contemporary families, theories and methods of psychotherapy, addictions, applied research methods, crisis and trauma counseling, gender and ethnicity in psychotherapy, and fieldwork.

    The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language, and academic preparation through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.


    The candidate will be expected to develop a program of research and to pursue both internal and external funding. The candidate must maintain a productive research program, which may result from collaborative research across the University, with other academic institutions, or other external agencies.

    Student mentoring is valued in our department, and a successful candidate will mentor and support undergraduate and graduate students of diverse backgrounds in conducting research.


    The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committee and other service assignments.

    The successful applicant should be prepared to take an active role in the MS Clinical Psychology graduate program. Responsibilities on this committee include serving as a mentor and advisor around issues of graduate student development, participating in program requirements, and providing clinical case consultation or supervision.
