Search and Discovery are key pillars of the Adobe Cloud strategy. Our goal is to empower our customers’ digital journeys with semantic search, visual search, browse, discovery and recommendations of creative content, documents, tools, tutorials and other assets important to our customers.

We aim to understand our customers intent and provide the assets they need right when they need them. This includes personal content such as photos and videos, team and enterprise assets, and marketplace assets.

Our search platform indexes over 50B documents and serves 200M requests per day with integrations in a wide range of Creative Cloud and Document Cloud products and surfaces.

The Challenge

The Senior Director of Search Science will be responsible for building and managing a team of applied scientists, data scientists, and machine learning engineers.

The goal is to create a center of excellence for search science with a focus on ranking, intent and query understanding, and search evaluation and quality.

This leader will be responsible for implementing the models needed for groundbreaking search and discovery experiences across Creative Cloud and Document Cloud.

This individual and their team will work closely with the product and engineering leaders on the Search & Discovery team.

The role requires a leader with deep understanding of the science behind search, browse and recommendations and an ability to balance building horizontal and vertical-specific solutions.

The role requires deep understanding of the technologies and machine learning methods that create great customer experiences.

In addition, the role involves evaluating overall search quality to prioritize projects across the Search and Discovery portfolio as well as to evaluate ranking and intent models for potential AB testing and working with PM to make launch decisions.

The broader aim is to help customers find, browse and discover the content and assets that enable them to achieve their creative and document goals.

What you’ll do

Become part of the team fueling the growth of search, machine learning, and artificial intelligence as core technologies at Adobe.

Take ownership for Adobe’s search science team to power search, browse and recommendations for marketplace, enterprise and individually owned digital assets, as well as community, web, tutorial, and other content.

Drive the vision for next-generation of ranking algorithms across multiple products, including multi-modal and multi-lingual search for photos, illustrations, videos, text documents and Adobe help documentation and tutorials.

Build intent and query understanding technologies to handle keyword, natural language, and image-based queries as well as taking broader user context into account.

Evaluate investments and trade-offs in the search science platform and modeling, supporting dozens of use cases important to our customers.

Redefine the search evaluation and quality program to drive prioritization, model building, and successful launches.

  • You will develop aggressive, yet achievable roadmaps to deliver substantial search improvements. The focus will be on meeting the needs of the range of Adobe customers, from creative professionals, to knowledge workers, to marketers;
  • and from individuals to enterprises.

    You will ensure that the search science models and the experiences it enables adhere to all applicable compliance, privacy, legal, and AI Ethics requirements.

    You will be an inspiring leader and evangelist for search and retrieval technologies within the Search & Discovery team and across Creative Cloud and Document Cloud.

    You will focus on recruiting to build a top-notch search science team that scales with the increasing demands for highly relevant search and discovery experiences.

    What you need to succeed

    Proven applied science leadership experience of 10+ years, including leading highly diverse and global teams

    Expertise in Natural Language Processing, Deep Learning, Neural Networks, or Visual Search

    3+ years of experience with search or recommendation applied science (e.g. ranking, query understanding)

    Track record of delivering cloud-scale, data-driven products and services

    An ability to think strategically, look around corners, and create a vision for the current quarter, the year, and five years down the road

    Proven ability to influence across teams

    Excellent communication skills and an ability to collaborate with engineering and product management partners while delivering a complex roadmap

    BS or MS in Computer Science or background in a strong scientific subject area

    Would be helpful

    A passion for and familiarity with Adobe's products

    Familiarity with Elasticsearch, Lucene and / or Solr preferred
