Job Summary
The Student Wellness Center (SWC) provides a variety of medical services, which are similar to the outpatient care provided in a large group practice.
These services include primary and urgent / acute care; evaluation, treatment and guidance for individual health problems;
family planning services; nutrition; physical therapy; psychiatry; sports medicine; public health prevention programs and health education.
In addition, the SWC provides limited initial care for work injuries of employees, and if necessary, assists in referring such persons for ongoing care.
The SWC may also provide first aid to campus visitors. Limited evening or weekend work may be required. The licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist performs the laboratory testing under the general supervision of a Manager of Lab and Allied Health Services.
Duties also include specimen collection and processing in the absence of a phlebotomist. Working collaboratively to support student success is the bottom line purpose and mission of this and all SWC positions.
Key Responsibilities
Following the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results
Maintaining records, which demonstrate that proficiency-testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens
Adhering to the laboratory’s quality control policies and documenting all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance
Following the laboratory’s policies whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance
Being able to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correcting the problem or notifying the appropriate supervisor
Documenting all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications
Performing in house studies and audits
Periodic review of all pertinent laboratory manuals
Cooperatively participates in staff meetings, SWC committees, and in-service training, AAAHC Accreditation, and health education projects
Proposes and prepares studies, records and reports in support of SWC quality control efforts
Provides SJSU Commencement ceremony health care coverage, as needed
Participates in Division and campus events, meetings, and projects as requested
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Working knowledge of software applications used at the Student Wellness Center
Working knowledge of the preparation of specimens
Working knowledge of various laboratory disciplines, tests and procedures including chemical, physical, microscopic, microbiological, bacteriological, serological, hematological, immunological, and other related disciplines and laboratory tests
Thorough knowledge of methods and procedures involved in phlebotomy, including aseptic technique
Knowledge of laboratory safety fundamentals and OSHA Laboratory Standards
Ability to identify incongruities in test procedures and inconsistencies in reports of test results for a patient
Ability to notice pertinent details of specimens under microscopic study
Ability to demonstrate skill in the performance of a variety of laboratory analyses and evaluate information against measurable criteria;

Ability to perform applicable mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately
Ability to perform accurately in a detailed-oriented environment
Ability to handle multiple tasks, organize work priorities and special projects
Ability and willingness to adjust and be flexible if called upon

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science or equivalent from an accredited institution or equivalent post-secondary education, training and experience as defined by the California Division of Laboratory Science or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities and two years of progressively responsible administrative and technical work within a clinical laboratory
Possess and maintain a valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license

Anticipated Hiring Range : $5,798 / month - $6,162 / month
CSU Salary Range : $4,704 / month - $9,079 / month
