Job Summary

The Assistant Athletics Director for Development, under supervision from the Senior Deputy Athletics Director, is responsible for developing and executing the plan to increase total membership in One Spartan Nation, with a particular focus on increasing the number of new members through both giving and ticket sales, drive increased membership renewal percentages, plan and execute an annual volunteer Membership Drive, design and manage the stewardship process for all Athletics annual giving donors in One Spartan Nation, and lead the sales of premium seating (suites, club areas, and courtside seats) for the Department.

The incumbent will collaborate with University Advancement colleagues in Annual Giving and the Special Gifts office to conceptualize, develop, deliver and track appeals.

The Assistant Athletes Director for Development will also manage and grow a portfolio of prospects and donors capable of making annual gifts of $1,000 or greater.

The incumbent will be responsible for the development and implementation of Athletics affinity programs to encourage the participation of alumni, students, faculty and staff, parents, and friends in supporting SJSU Athletics.

The incumbent will also manage a portfolio of prospects in order to cultivate, ask, and steward in the major gifts process.

The Assistant Athletic Director for Development will serve as the lead on the premium seating sales and fulfillment for Football and Basketball.

This includes identifying, cultivating, asking, and stewarding (through hospitality) One Spartan Nation members to purchase suites, club seats, and courtside seats at Spartan Athletics.

Also, the incumbent will identify major gift prospects for Athletics priority projects for proper advancement in the Development process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, recruit and execute all aspects of the annual One Spartan Nation Membership Drive, including volunteer engagement
  • Consistently update all department annual giving collateral and procedural documents to accurately reflect fundraising best practices
  • Assist the Senior Deputy Assistant Director and Associate Assistant Director for Major Gifts with identification and qualification of major gift prospects
  • Assist the Senior Deputy Assistant Director with the development and execution of all Athletics fundraising goals, program plans, and relevant budgets
  • Identifying, cultivating, asking, and stewarding One Spartan Nation members to purchase suites, club seats, and courtside seats at Spartan Athletics
  • Collaborate with the Director of Athletics and Deputy Director of Athletics Development to strategically fill the AD’s suite for Football and away game travel for Football (and other specified road games)
  • Manage a portfolio of 25-50 upper-level annual giving or major gift donors. Develop, document and implement engagement and solicitation strategies for each assigned prospect
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Broad knowledge of the principles of fundraising and the ability to participate in all aspects of the gift cycle
  • Knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of fundraising for higher education and superior knowledge of the best practices within the Athletics annual giving field
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement and evaluate a comprehensive athletics annual giving program, establishing goals and objectives that translate into operating plans
  • Knowledge of best practices within the athletics’ annual giving field
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospects / donors and effectively move prospects through the development cycle
  • Sensitivity and understanding of Title IX issues, and an innate ability to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Knowledge of NCAA Division 1 intercollegiate athletics
  • Ability to learn NCAA and Mountain West Conference guidelines, policies, rules and regulations
  • Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of related development experience, preferably, in an educational institution
  • Equivalent experience in business will be considered
  • License

    A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

    Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

  • Experience with NCAA Division 1 intercollegiate athletics
