Job Summary

The Transfer Admissions Counselor / Recruiter performs various functions under the supervision of the Associate Director, Student Outreach and Recruitment (SOAR) and receive work-lead direction from the Lead, Admissions Counselor / Recruiter, but works collaboratively with Undergraduate Admissions to deliver a variety of recruitment and advising efforts in support of attracting and enrolling an academically strong, culturally diverse and socially conscious undergraduate student population in support of SJSU’s Enrollment Management Plan.

  • This position is responsible for advising and counseling all prospective, new, and continuing students attempting to complete Title 5, CSU and University undergraduate admissions and degree requirements;
  • conducts undergraduate admission evaluations and assessments; and actively collaborates with other university staff involved in various aspects of admissions and records processing, to ensure that related processes are completed in a timely manner.

  • The objective in all interactions is to provide customer service and information regarding policies and procedures; to suggest actions that will resolve issues;
  • and to establish cordial and collegial relationships with contacts in the undergraduate admissions unit. The primary responsibility of the Transfer Admissions Counselor / Recruiter is to represent San Jose State University to prospective students, parents, community college counselors.

    Working under limited supervision, the position is responsible for maintaining a high level of knowledge regarding CSU admissions policies, with special emphasis on transfer students and non-resident / international policies, procedures, and advising practices.

    This position maintains a high level of expertise in undergraduate transfer and freshmen admission requirements, processes, and regulations to facilitate quality customer service to ensure enrollment at SJSU.

    Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts domestic and international advising and recruitment to prospective students
  • Conducts in-depth interviews to assess students’ needs, goals, major choices, and preparedness for university level work
  • Creates and presents information on CSU application, admissions and Next Steps to Transfer students, Counselors and organizations to ensure proper compliance
  • Coordinates the liaison relationships between the SJSU Colleges and the Admissions Counseling staff by organizing meetings for the purpose of having Colleges present information to the Admissions Counselors / Advisors to use in the marketing of various academic programs
  • Coordinates pre-approved recruitment activities off-campus to develop and maintain collaborative programs involving community college students, faculty, and staff
  • Participates in designing and conducting SJSU admissions presentations and various workshops such as the Cal State Apply and Next Steps workshops, as needed or requested by the manager
  • Coordinates, plans, and participates in Academic Open Houses, Community College Luncheons / Conferences, Admitted Student Receptions and all on campus recruitment / yield activities
  • Serves on department or university recruitment / yield committees, such as Orientation and Transfer Information programs, as request by the manager and as needed
  • Collaborates with the manager of Student Outreach and Recruitment regarding the admissions application cycle and updating web screens / pages
  • Verifies / assesses documents / transcripts for Transfer admission and impaction determinations
  • Supports all areas of the Office of Admissions and Outreach as well as the other Enrollment Services Units to ensure that shared processes are completed by posted deadlines

  • Ability to logically reason and analyze data to make informed decisions
  • Ability to identify problems and find resolutions in an efficient manner
  • Ability to utilizes or learn to utilize CMS for record keeping and to retrieve information
  • Knowledge of technical databases and programs for word documents, databases, communication tools, spreadsheets, etc.
  • Ability to travel consistently and independently off campus to various community college and / or high school sites for recruitment events and presentation visits
  • Ability to handle sensitive communications with students, parents, employees and external agencies
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations
  • Ability to take initiative and is resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements
  • Ability to collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data
  • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required
  • Ability to recognize multicultural, multi-gendered, and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly
  • Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports
  • Knowledge of technology and software applications such as : word processing, spreadsheet, database management, and communication tools
  • Ability to learn PeopleSoft, Filemaker, OnBase, and other CRM programs
  • Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
  • A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s level degree in higher education or similar field
  • One (1) to two (2) years of program implementation and coordination in higher education
  • One (1) to two (2) years of presentation experience

    Anticipated Hiring Range : $4,691 / month - $4,891 / month

    CSU Salary Range : $4,691 / month - $6,683 / month

    Additional Information

    Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.
