Job Summary

Reporting to the Coordinator of Field Experience and Department Chair(s), the Admissions and Recruitment Coordinator will provide overall management and oversight to the recruitment, advisement, and application process for students applying to the Teacher Education and Special Education Departments at San Jose State University (Departments herein).

They will serve as the Departments’ primary resource for planning, developing, and implementing recruitment and admissions policies and practices that align with the College’s mission, vision, and strategic plan.

The Coordinator will support recruitment and application processes and website presence for special programs such as our growing teacher residencies, intern programs, and others as they are developed.

We do this through an emancipatory approach with a focus on four priority areas : community engaged, culturally sustaining, holistic, and interdisciplinary preparation programs.

This position is a critical one focused on recruiting and admitting candidates for our teacher preparation programs that reflect the diversity of the communities we serve.

It involves developing relationships with community, district, college, and SJSU partners to identify and support potential candidates as well as supporting applicants throughout the admissions process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Organize, plan and direct a multi-dimensional, student-focused, and data-informed recruitment strategy to increase teacher education enrollments, specifically among Black, Indigenous, and other teachers of color and those who plan to teach in areas of particular shortage (e.
  • g. Special Education, STEM, bilingual, and TK / K).

  • Develop, implement and maintain new processes to attract and recruit teacher candidates whose interest in teaching aligns with the mission / vision and strategic plan.
  • Conduct market analysis to develop new markets and analyze all recruitment initiatives.
  • Develop and implement marketing and communication strategies focused on target audiences, employing print, email, web-based and social media platforms.
  • Manage a webpage presence and periodically convey admissions information.
  • Provide strategic direction, operational oversight, and guidance for the Departments’ admissions processes.
  • Troubleshoots student admissions issues with the Office of Graduate Admissions and related academic departments (e.g. Teacher Education, Special Education).
  • Provide leadership and coaching to the admission staff to ensure that all admission and recruitment efforts are carried out effectively and in line with best practices in admissions in higher education.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned
  • Knowledge of student development theories and principles, retention strategies, and program development
  • General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned
  • Strong-problem solving and creative thinking skills, as well as exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • A deep understanding of the practices associated with leading communities of practice towards change
  • Ability to work in a self-directed environment and as a member of an interactive and collaborative team
  • Ability to develop and maintain assessment and accreditation documentation for accountability purposes
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including but not limited to presenting ideas and concepts orally, in writing, or presentation format and use consultative and facilitation skills to gain consensus
  • Ability to work occasional weekend and evening hours to support programmatic activities
  • Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
  • A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in education, student personnel services, or relevant field
  • Public school teaching experience and knowledge of persistent teacher shortage areas
  • Bilingual, Spanish / English
  • Strong experience with demonstrating commitment to integrating a College’s mission and vision in recruitment and admissions policies and practices
  • Experience with STEM fields and credential requirements
  • Experience with CTC Teaching Performance Expectations
  • Experience with California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) Educator Preparation Program Standards (Common and Program)
  • Experience with California Multiple Subject, Single Subject, and Education Specialist Credential Program requirements
  • Experience with Teacher Residency and Intern Teaching Programs or similar programs

    Classification : Student Services Professional III

    Anticipated Hiring Range : $5,189 / month - $5,355 / month

    CSU Hiring Range : $4,691 / month - $6,683 / month

    Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.
