Job Summary

The SQL Database and Server Administrator job responsibility is to proactively monitor and maintain SQL databases and Windows servers for Auxis’ customers using best practices processes and methodology.

Additionally, the resource is responsible for issuing resolution and capacity planning for the mentioned platforms.

Responsibilities

  • General Windows server administration :
  • Diagnosis and troubleshooting of Auxis monitoring system generated alerts for Windows servers o Some include, Availability, CPU Usage, Physical Memory Usage, Swap Memory Usage, Hard disk utilization, Service availability, System Event alerts, etc
  • Perform SQL Database Assessments for new customer environments, including : o Determine database backup and restoration schedules for each database based on business requirements and established service level agreements o Define maintenance strategies for individual database objects, such as data and index reorganizations o Identify established parameters for SQL Server user access and permissions o Review and baseline Windows and SQL Server performance standards for each server o Review storage deployment of the physical and logical layout of the data and log files o Definition of incident response service levels, based on prioritization and business impact
  • Database Developing, Maintenance and Monitoring The first area of focus involves providing regularly scheduled maintenance of the SQL Server environment, as well as implement automated monitoring of the environment to identify and resolve issues that affect its performance.
  • It also includes the development responsibility based on Auxis customer’s business requirements as an on-going activity.

    o SQL Server Maintenance involves recurring activities that are regularly performed to improve the performance, security, integrity and availability of the SQL Server based systems.

    o Database monitoring involves the implementation of a 24x7 monitoring and alerting tools o It involves defining the initial monitoring and performance thresholds

  • SQL Server Maintenance and Issue Resolution o Reviewing the SQL Server backup and restoration schedules, including SQL Server backup success verification and verification that all necessary database elements are being backed up o Periodic database reorganizations, which include defragmentation of tables and other structures, including index rebuilds.
  • o Regular review of database and log files, and management of related file space o Set up automated jobs (using DTS / SSIS packages) to perform object-

    level maintenance tasks o Monitor success / failure status of SQL Agent jobs o Termination of resource-intensive and long-

    running processes when required to avoid / minimize impact of slowdowns and failures (based on monitoring parameters) o SQL Server or Service restarts as needed based on criticality of performance degradation, or when system failures render server unavailable (based on monitoring parameters) o Data refresh / restores for the development environment with production data as required o SQL Server patch management as needed to keep current with SQL Server binaries o Database code promotions to QA (if available) and Production on a scheduled basis to minimize database / server downtime o SQL Server troubleshooting and issue resolution within the scope of the support agreement (infrastructure and SQL Server level) o Detailed investigation and resolution of root causes for performance degradation or high resource utilization (outside the scope of the normal support parameters) o Ad hoc query tuning as needed o SQL Server Agent job creation as needed o Review and optimization of database packages, stored procedures, views, objects, indexes, etc.

    o Detailed documentation of the database environment and procedures (upon request) o Testing and validation of disaster recovery plan (if available and upon request) o Upgrades, enhancements and changes to the existing support environment o Other tasks and activities as required and requested

  • SQL Server Security o Monitor and manage database user access, including granting permissions and setting up different levels of access to users as required by the applications, and providing guidance on user access parameters and resolution of security vulnerabilities o Review and validate security status and identify / resolve identified server vulnerabilities
  • SQL Server Business Intelligence o Develop, make adjustments and troubleshoot Reporting Services reports for customers, suggest enhancements when necessary o Create Integration Services packages as needed to load / transfer data or perform Data Quality analyzes
  • Support automation and efficiencies o Ability to prepare and maintain MS PowerShell scripts o Ability to develop automate routinely server tasks in order to expedite resolution and improve team’s time management
  • Knowledge and / or training on best practices or IT frameworks, such as ITIL

    Skills and Experience

    Bachelor’s degree in computer science or relevant work experience 1-3 years IT operation experience with strong understanding of database structures, theories, principles, and practices Experience running SQL in a virtualized and cloud (PaaS) environments Proven experience with the installation, maintenance, and upgrades of SQL Server Proven experience with data migration and data replication tools, technologies, and strategies SQL Management Studio, SQL Server Analysis Services, SQL Server Reporting Services, and Integration Services Advanced knowledge of reporting and query tools and practices Advanced knowledge of conceptual, logical and physical database design Experience with OLAP and OLTP MCSA SQL Server 2012 above
