Job Summary

The Lead Painter is responsible for providing the full range of journey-level skilled painting, finishing and related work maintaining a wide variety of interior and exterior surfaces and structures, to ensure a clean, safe and attractive learning environment.

Provides lead work direction to several journey-level crafts workers and semi-skilled assistants, laying out and coordinating the work flow for jobs, and preparing materials lists and ordering supplies for jobs.

Position makes decisions based upon sound maintenance practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides lead work direction to several journey level crafts workers and semi-skilled assistants and supports employee development plans
  • Lays out, directs, assists and coordinates the work flow for jobs and project planning
  • Inspects paint jobs to ensure they meet quality requirements and specifications
  • Prepares materials lists and orders supplies for jobs
  • Maintains stock and materials in the warehouse
  • Repaints facilities, buildings, offices, classrooms, restrooms, sheds
  • Works from blueprints, specifications, drawings, and instructions to paint internal / external structures
  • Estimates cost, time and materials for painting projects
  • Maintains all licenses, certifications, permits and mandated record keeping
  • Prepares standard reports, to include as-builts for database update
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of effective supervisory practices and techniques
  • Ability to apply paints and finishes neatly and accurately
  • Ability to mix paints and finishes and match colors
  • Ability to erect and work from scaffolds, rigging and ladders
  • Ability to implement a customer (constituent) service approach, with a commitment to high ethical standards and to present work to a wide variety of audiences
  • Must be able to accommodate a work schedule that varies according to operational needs and may include evening and weekend hours
  • Must be able to successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for CSU campuses and pass the course exam
  • Required Qualifications

  • Must possess those abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard painter’s apprenticeship program.
  • One to two years of experience as a journey-level painter that included work coordination responsibilities. Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations.

    License

    A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

    Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

    Anticipated Hiring Range : $5,742 / month - $6,160 / month

    CSU Hiring Range : $5,742 / month - $7,414 / month

    Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.
