Job Summary

The Research Analyst / Programmer II serves as a key programmer that integrates accurate, valid, and reliable data in multifaceted complex operating systems, applications, network, and databases, as well as knowledge of distributed processing technology in the department of Institutional Research.

This role will develop coding to construct various data files in preparation for analysis and development, programming applications, and database analysis as part of the coordination and compilation of institutional data to generate accurate, valid, and reliable reporting as well as enhance ease of data access to internal and external stakeholders including supporting data literacy campus-wide.

The position also provides comprehensive data management, programming, and analytical support to Institutional Effectiveness and Strategic Analytics (IESA), Academic Affairs, and when appropriate other campus constituents related to institutional or system priorities, mandated or other required information including meeting accreditation standards.

This role will perform complex research studies, and other requests that fosters better understanding of institutional efficacy as well as apply a social justice framework in algorithms, coding, data construction, and the like to ensure the unit considers diverse, inclusive, and equitable approaches in its data analytics and reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and generate databases that produce valid, reliable, and consumable information that will be used by IESA unit users as well as university stakeholders to easily access data for reporting needs
  • Write queries, develop data management logic, and integrate data sources, as you build, clean, and standardize data sets for use to conduct various analyses and create reports and dashboards
  • Manage and clean large datasets for optimizing reporting and efficiency.
  • Create data templates and organize data to update institutional dashboards (e.g., IESA, IR, CDW, etc.)
  • Provide appropriate explanation of information, data dictionary, and other relevant specifications of data to be collected and maintained to sure their use is effective, valid, and reliable
  • Identify, investigate, and work to resolve data quality issues with relevant data being used across IESA and other units IESA interfaces with to ensure accurate reporting of information
  • Perform technical tasks and provides technical support on data collection, aggregation, analytics, and assigned evaluation activities
  • Provide documentation, user support, and access to data sources as required.
  • Maintain relevant databases as well as cultivate and integrate diverse data sources and effectively manage data quality issues
  • Cross-train appropriate information, knowledge, skills, and competencies about managing, using, and reporting data
  • Develop systematic reporting capabilities, documentation, and web-based sites related to assigned projects to support operational continuity and institutional effectiveness.
  • Prepare data to be mined and analyzed to report to internal and external organizations related to institutional or system priorities, mandated or required information, and accreditation requirements
  • Prepare informative, comprehensible, and formatted reports and presentations to facilitate the interpretation and utilization of data by a diverse audience of institutional stakeholders
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to use one or more industry standard programming languages and various report / screen generators as required by the position
  • Ability to use applications software, data structures and utilities, operating systems, and communication interfaces within the computing environment
  • Ability to perform interactive debugging and to test and analyze program failures
  • Knowledge of structured programming techniques and the ability to use appropriate productivity tools to provide for more rapid development of applications.
  • Ability to write / modify programs using multiple applications and databases
  • Ability to develop program implementation plans, install software, and apply fixes
  • Understanding of technical and vendor documentation and ability to maintain internal documentation
  • Data management skills and the ability to generate, query, merge, transform, and restructure diverse data sets and account for missing, duplicated, and unmatched data using SQL and similar techniques
  • Ability to automate certain data tasks through the use of syntax and data logic (e.g., in SQL)
  • Ability to apply general statistical techniques, such as tests of difference and association (e.g., t-tests, ANOVA, correlation, regression)
  • Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree, preferably in computer science or business, or equivalent training and applied experience
  • Three years of experience in business applications analysis, design, and programming for medium or large scale, multi-programmed computer
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree computer science, data analytics, mathematics, statistics, public or business administration, education, social sciences, economics, or other related fields
  • Three or more years of experience using similar function with proficient programming and data analytics skills
  • Experience working directly in Institutional Research / Institutional Effectiveness, Assessment, and / or Data Analytics / Business Intelligence offices
  • Experience in higher education research, coding / programming, database development and management, project management, enrollment management and / or scheduling concepts and procedures
  • Experience running statistical models and predictions (such as linear and binary regressions) on higher education data sets

    Classification : Analyst / Programmer - Career

    Anticipated Hiring Range : $6,500 / month - $6,800 / month

    CSU Hiring Range : $4,372 / month - $10,792 / month
