The Opportunity

eBay is looking for a seasoned Senior Director, Marketing Technology to join their global growth organization. Based in San Jose, CA.

The Sr. Director will help build the world’s best digital marketing platform, leveraging best of breed technologies and eBay’s enormous amount of data to support its customers and grow the business.

This individual will define the technical direction and vision for the marketing platform, execute on that strategy, and help delight eBay’s customers with personalized, simplified, and human experiences that amplify the uniqueness and the value of eBay.

They will help enable the current marketing channels (e.g. email, SEM, display, and social), while making it easy to experiment with and scale to future channels.

They will identify where it makes sense to build channel-specific capabilities vs. more channel-agnostic platform capabilities.

This leader will work closely with the data science teams to better empower and leverage science for improved personalization, inspiration, and conversion across eBay’s various marketing channels.

The successful candidate will be a seasoned and thoughtful leader who is able to observe new problems, identify ways to fix them and execute a plan.

This candidate will be a problem solver who enjoys coming to the table with new ideas and innovative approaches to old ways of thinking.

They will be highly collaborative, work effectively and efficiently across all functions, and will help drive a culture of partnership across eBay.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with the business of eBay and will personally connect to the mission of keeping customer-centricity at the forefront of everything they set out to accomplish.


  • Understanding customer behavior data at a deep level and leveraging that knowledge to drive eBay’s customer strategy going forward;
  • Defining the longer-term vision, architecture, and related design principles for eBay’s digital marketing platform;
  • Effectively partnering across the broader marketing organization to understand the business and product needs and ensure the technical strategy meets those requirements;
  • Promoting a data-driven software development culture of quality, collaboration, inclusion, rapid delivery, and customer impact;
  • Determining where the company should build in-house solutions vs. leverage third party software;
  • Recruiting, developing, and managing a high-performing team of technical leaders, architects, engineers, and program manage and across multiple locations;
  • Representing the marketing technology team in the broader eBay technical community and with the executive leadership team;
  • Engage and learn from external technical thought leaders to learn the latest trends and evangelize the novel work eBay is doing within the team;
  • Serving the needs of internal stakeholders while delivering an exceptional experience for the end user; establishing best practices and process standardization;
  • Identifying existing gaps and ensuring prioritization for the engineering organization : monitoring progress, distilling key learnings, and sharing feedback with the wider organization for alignment and adjustment.
  • Experience & Qualifications

  • 10+ years of marketing experience, with expertise building in-house, high performance digital marketing teams
  • 10+ years of management experience leading high-functioning teams
  • Broad functional skill set with proven success collaborating across product, operations, engineering and leadership teams
  • Prior experience in design and implementation of big data systems and platforms with expertise in scalability, high availability systems (Expertise in HPC (High performance computing) systems or equivalent).
  • Prior experience in deployment and architecture of big data systems in Cloud and Hybrid environments (ebay has both)
  • Expertise in leading platform engineering team and influencing architecture, design of horizontal scalable platforms
  • Strong track of executing multiyear cross-functional engineering platforms across teams with emphasis on right technology trade-offs
  • Well-versed with competitive technologies such as Adobe, Salesforce, Google tech stack and ability to make right technology choices
  • Excellent decision-making skills with a knack for identifying, prioritizing, and articulating the highest impact initiatives
  • Prior experience successfully leading and inspiring diverse teams
  • Execution-driven, growth-oriented, customer-centric ownership mindset to drive performance against agreed KPIs
  • Deep insight into the digital sector
  • Ability to develop strong cultures, lead groups of individuals effectively and manage cross- functional coordination
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, adept at communicating simply and effectively in large or small group settings
  • A strong project management & problem-solving track record - ability to think critically through unique problems with no set playbook and quickly implement a path to a solution
