Job Summary

The Facilities Maintenance Mechanic, assigned to the Energy & Utilities unit, works independently or as a team member under the general supervision of the Utilities Operations Supervisor.

The incumbent works as a skilled generalist utilizing journey level skills in the mechanical or plumbing trades along with strong skills in other trade areas to perform a variety of skilled preventive and general maintenance, repair, construction and renovation work on utility infrastructure systems.

Typically, skills are utilized to maintain and repair mechanical facilities equipment and systems associated with high and low pressure steam heating, chilled water loop, storm drainage networks and sanitary sewer utility networks, domestic and recycled water distribution including irrigation and fire hydrants, and low voltage fire alarm and security networks to ensure a clean, safe and attractive campus / learning environment.

The incumbent uses a computerized maintenance system to ensure the preventive maintenance program objectives are met and also provides safety instructions and directions to unskilled or semi-skilled assistants.

The Energy & Utilities unit is part of the Facilities Development & Operations department which provides maintenance and operations services to a University campus spread across multiple sites and comprised of more than 150 acres, 81 buildings, and more than seven million gross square feet.

The Energy & Utilities team employs 19 full time permanent staff responsible for operation and maintenance of a 5.6 megawatt central plant and utility networks and systems including domestic and recycled water, irrigation, storm drain, sanitary sewer, heating and chilled water systems, and low voltage fire alarm and security systems.

For FY21-22, the unit’s operating budget is +$14.7M including funds associated with purchased utilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintains repairs, and installs domestic water, recycled water, irrigation, and well water systems, including but not limited to piping, mains, and pumping equipment, filtering / purification equipment, hydrants, backcheck valves, meters, piping, valves, control and instrumentation devices, and other equipment or devices that are part of the system
  • Maintains, repairs, and installs fire alarm and security system networks including but not limited to control panels, wiring, and devices and programs systems as necessary for functionality
  • Maintains, repairs, and installs sanitary sewer and storm drain systems including but not limited to piping, mains, manholes, inlets and drains, cleanouts, sump pumps and other pumping devices, valves, control and instrumentation devices, flow meters and other measurement devices, and other equipment or devices that are part of the system
  • Maintains, repairs, and installs chilled water loop systems including but not limited to insulated chilled water pipes, isolation / pressure relief / safety / pressure regulator valves, strainers, pressure and temperature transmitters, flow meters, associated control and instrumentation devices, and other equipment or devices that are part of the system
  • Maintains, repairs, and installs steam / condensate systems including but not limited to insulated steam / condensate pipes, isolation valves, pressure relief / safety / regulator valves, steam traps, strainers, pressure and temperature transmitters, flow meters, control and instrumentation devices, and other equipment and devices that are part of the system
  • Inspects various types of equipment, systems, and areas to identify problems and needed repairs
  • Operates vehicles and equipment including a utility cart, scissor lift, boom lift and forklift (as certified), jackhammer, sewer rodding devices, and other equipment and tools for assignments
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to estimate cost, time and materials of assigned maintenance, repair and renovation work
  • Ability to analyze and respond to emergency situations
  • Ability to take initiative and plan, organize, coordinate and perform assigned work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work harmoniously with a diverse group of individuals throughout and outside of the organization
  • Ability to maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and / or computerized record-keeping systems and to prepare standard reports
  • Ability to successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for CSU campuses and pass the course exam
  • May be required to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Required Qualifications

  • Four years of increasingly responsible experience leading to journey-level skills in facility repair and maintenance, or any reasonable equivalent combination of training and experience as a facilities maintenance mechanic which demonstrates the achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of an applicable apprenticeship program
  • Requires the possession of a valid California Driver's License for the operation of any vehicle or equipment required for position and in any emergency situation
  • Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations
  • License

    A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

    Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification indicating completion of an applicable apprenticeship program
  • Journey level standing in the mechanical or plumbing trades
  • Knowledge of mechanical and plumbing systems including an understanding of building and / or automated control systems
  • Five years of journey level work experience in the maintenance, repair, or construction of mechanical or plumbing systems including utility network distribution systems

    Classification : Facilities Maintenance Mechanic

    Anticipated Hiring Range : $5,402 / month - $5,452 / month

    CSU Hiring Range : $5,402 / month - $6,904 / month
