Department Summary

The Department of Meteorology and Climate at San José State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor, tenure-track position in atmospheric chemistry that complements existing departmental expertise in wildfire weather, cloud physics, climate change, climate education research, mesoscale and synoptic meteorology.

A candidate will be preferred with interests both in how greenhouse gases and / or air quality drives regional climate change as a radiative forcing as well as how air quality may respond to climate change.

Required Qualifications

We seek outstanding candidates who will contribute to a tradition of high quality teaching and engaging students in research projects, as well as to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in atmospheric sciences and in STEM disciplines more broadly.

Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in atmospheric science (or a closely related discipline). A demonstrated track record in research and teaching is preferred.

Candidates will be evaluated on previous experience, communication skills, publication record, grant and contract activities, and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently.

We seek a candidate who will develop their own externally funded research projects and is interested in working on collaborative projects.

Applicants should demonstrate that they are prepared for and enthusiastic about teaching classes at the undergrad and graduate level, including but not limit to atmospheric chemistry, air pollution meteorology, statistical methods, or global carbon cycle.

They should also be familiar with a variety of modern teaching techniques and emerging technologies for instruction.

Applicants should have awareness of and sensitivity to educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

We highly value experience with and commitment to service in support of diversity, equity, and inclusion in meteorology and climate science and / or STEM in general.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong, externally funded and internationally recognized research program.

She or he will also supervise undergraduate and graduate students in research, and teach courses for meteorology and climate science majors at both undergrad and graduate (MS) level, and participate in departmental activities.

Candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committee and other service assignments.

Candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
